Springsteen Planning a Counter-Convention Concert?
Edited on Tue May-25-04 12:58 PM by ritc2750
It's about halfway down the page. Bruce Springsteen is mulling the idea of holding a free concert on the day and time that Bush is scheduled to address the GOP Convention -- I assume that means it would be broadcast live on one or more networks.

1. The RW's answer will be
a free concert with Toby Keith. No one will care. But they'll smile thinking they are sabotaging the Dem convention.

2. Toby Keith better not show up in Boston
Boston isn't exactly an enclave of fans of country music, heh :)

7. Boston is FAR ABOVE AND BEYOND the HATE and BIGOTRY....
that IS Country "Music".

Except for the Dixie Chicks, Willie Nelson, and the Cash family, I have found nothing good in Country.

8. thank you for
excluding the Cash family. I love country music but can't stand the shit on the radio anymore. Something that made me want to puke the other week is that Reba McEntire was given the "Cash Visonary" award or something like it at the Flameworthy awards.

Reba said after the fiasco of the Dixie Chicks boycott, "People should know when to keep their mouths shut" or something similiar.

Johnny Cash never ever would of said something like that. Country music is nothing more than crap rehashed from pop music. IMHO

23. Agreed
I do like "classic country", not this crap that is passed off as "country" these days. Ann_Coulter_is_a_man pointed out some other good artists, but they are few and far between with the current "artists" on the scene. Bleh, current country makes me want to :puke:

3. I want to see...
Springsteen at the Dem convention, I want him to let Kerry use "Born in the USA" as his theme song. It would utterly trump the Republicans on the "More-patriotic-than-thou" marketing. And the song beats the hell out of Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop Thinking about Tomorrow."

I remember when the Repukes were swooning to Born in the USA at one of their conventions, and it cracked me up that they only responded to the title of the song in their normal jingoistic fashion and didn't listen to the words.

Maybe Springsteen is still pissed at how they misused it. It's a great song and I was sickened to see it turned into a USA USA USA chant by a bunch of ignorant asses.

Far more so than most think. Like you said, listen to the words, but also to the meaning behind them.

11. okay
The meaning behind the words indeed are significant, but I fail to see the all-elusive 'patriotism' behind them, unless you consider being born in America is and of itself some weird form of patriotism.

By the way, I think this song has far more relevance today than when it was released. Here are the lyrics, let's all try to analyse them for 'patriotism', whatever that is:

Born down in a dead man’s town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that’s been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up

Born in the u.s.a., I was born in the u.s.a.
I was born in the u.s.a., born in the u.s.a.

Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

Born in the u.s..a....

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man said son if it was up to me
Went down to see my v.a. man
He said son, don’t you understand

I had a brother at khe sahn
Fighting off the viet cong
They’re still there, he’s all gone

He had a woman he loved in saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I’m ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain’t got nowhere to go

"Born in the USA" is the classic song of protest against exploitation, war, and manipulation. What's more American and more genuinely patriotic than that?

15. hmmmm
Yeah, I concede the point.

I'll still insist that isn't the reason the GOP played it at their convention - it was misplaced jingoism at its worst.

12. True,not patriotic
but right in line with Kerrys agenda of the time. Ithink Ron Kovic was the inspiration for "cool rockin daddy in the USA"

6. Oh Thank God...
Wifey came home a couple of days ago and told me she heard something about Springsteen and a concert for the Republicans. I nearly had a stroke.

Now, all is right with the world again... Except for all the stuff that's obviously wrong.

13. Toby Keith to Open Summer Concert Tour on July 24, in Boston..???
Yep he announced it this morning on CNN..

Battle of the Bands!! haaaaaa
Springsteen is gonna kick theat stupid non-patriots A***.

Did Toby Keith actually serve his country in any way other than capitalize on the "Bush/War/Patriotism' theme?

I know he played semi-pro football, but he's sure a wealthier man because of the patriotism of others.

bring it on..

19. this should be pure 'entertainment'
I wonder how many buses Keith will have to charter to bring in rednecks and hee-haws to his little show.

If I didn't object to supporting his Nazi ass, I'd say we should all buy tickets and...welcome him.

21. Wow - Read Down (GOP & The Weinsteins - Farenheit 911)
Michael Moore's Bush-whacking documentary, "Fahrenheit 9/11," could become a campaign issue.

We hear that Republican officials plan to complain to the Federal Election Commission that Miramax honchos Harvey and Bob Weinstein have violated campaign-finance laws by bankrolling Moore's film, according to one well-placed GOP source.

"This is a blatant political ad in the guise of a documentary," says the source. "It's totally in contravention of the McCain-Feingold ."

Richard Mellon Scaife, anyone?
