Springsteen Planning a Counter-Convention Concert?

It's about halfway down the page. Bruce Springsteen is mulling the idea of holding a free concert on the day and time that Bush is scheduled to address the GOP Convention -- I assume that means it would be broadcast live on one or more networks.

Except for the Dixie Chicks, Willie Nelson, and the Cash family, I have found nothing good in Country.

excluding the Cash family. I love country music but can't stand the shit on the radio anymore. Something that made me want to puke the other week is that Reba McEntire was given the "Cash Visonary" award or something like it at the Flameworthy awards.

Reba said after the fiasco of the Dixie Chicks boycott, "People should know when to keep their mouths shut" or something similiar.

Johnny Cash never ever would of said something like that. Country music is nothing more than crap rehashed from pop music. IMHO

And June too. They were so talented, suck kind and giving people. They made some beautiful music!

I do like "classic country", not this crap that is passed off as "country" these days. Ann_Coulter_is_a_man pointed out some other good artists, but they are few and far between with the current "artists" on the scene. Bleh, current country makes me want to :puke:

Springsteen at the Dem convention, I want him to let Kerry use "Born in the USA" as his theme song. It would utterly trump the Republicans on the "More-patriotic-than-thou" marketing. And the song beats the hell out of Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop Thinking about Tomorrow."

I remember when the Repukes were swooning to Born in the USA at one of their conventions, and it cracked me up that they only responded to the title of the song in their normal jingoistic fashion and didn't listen to the words.

Maybe Springsteen is still pissed at how they misused it. It's a great song and I was sickened to see it turned into a USA USA USA chant by a bunch of ignorant asses.

Far more so than most think. Like you said, listen to the words, but also to the meaning behind them.

The meaning behind the words indeed are significant, but I fail to see the all-elusive 'patriotism' behind them, unless you consider being born in America is and of itself some weird form of patriotism.

By the way, I think this song has far more relevance today than when it was released. Here are the lyrics, let's all try to analyse them for 'patriotism', whatever that is:

"Born in the USA" is the classic song of protest against exploitation, war, and manipulation. What's more American and more genuinely patriotic than that?

I'll still insist that isn't the reason the GOP played it at their convention - it was misplaced jingoism at its worst.

Wifey came home a couple of days ago and told me she heard something about Springsteen and a concert for the Republicans. I nearly had a stroke.
