Nuclear Experiment Performed At Nevada Test Site
By KEN RITTER
ASSOCIATED PRESS

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Government scientists performed an underground nuclear experiment Tuesday at the Nevada Test Site, the National Nuclear Security Administration said.

The subcritical experiment involved detonating high explosives packed around plutonium in a steel sphere 963 feet below the surface.

Anti-nuclear groups criticize the subcritical experiments as contrary to the spirit of the 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty on nuclear arms. The U.S. has observed a moratorium on full-scale nuclear testing since 1992, but has not ratified the treaty.

"It's just the wrong message," said Peggy Maze Johnson, director of Citizen Alert, a Nevada anti-nuclear advocacy group. "We'd be screaming and yelling if any other countries were conducting subcriticals."

6. I have a friend working on this project...
She is part of the design team for the underground HVAC system. There are some very interesting problems involved.

While I struggle with the idea of testing at all, at least it is not a full-scale test. And there are serious concerns about the behavior of the warheads in our nuclear arsenal. Some of them are past their design life, and nobody is quite sure how they have aged. Nobody seems to think there is the possibility of something catastrophic happening, but there is a good possibility that they wouldn't work as intended.

Of course, it would be nice if we didn't need an arsenal of nuclear weapons at all...

7. That would be nice, wouldn't it?
What would this government do if the other countries in the world came here and demanded that we get rid of our weapons of mass destruction? I always wonder why we seem to be allowed to have them, and we always demand that no one else obtain their own. We are, after all, the only country that has ever used them.

'Arms Inspectors' Bolster Canadian Anti-war Movement
by Mark Bourrie

OTTAWA - A Canada-based peace and disarmament group plans to launch ''weapons inspections'' in the United States to draw attention to its claim that the country is a dangerous rogue state.

Canadian activists David Langille and Christy Ferguson of the group Rooting Out Evil, which plans to inspect US sites they suspect if developing weapons of mass destruction. (Canadian Press Photo)
The group, Rooting Out Evil, plans to assemble volunteer weapons inspectors at U.S.-Canada border checkpoints some time next year and says it has already found 'volunteers' for the campaign from Europe, North America and Asia. It is asking voluntary inspectors to sign up at its website - www.rootingoutevil.org.
<snip>

Note: I didn't have the article that described their attempt, but this is good anyway.

8. i had the "pleasure" of spending a weekend with a nuclear engineer
recently, his field of expertise? "life extension" pretty much what you would expect it to be. and frankly, the guy was an idiot. it really scared me to know that he was responsible for any part of our nuclear arsenal. i can't imagine all the OTHER idiots they employ!

it was strange, myself, the nuclear engineer, a reformed skinhead and another guy sharing a hotel room for a weekend! guess you "had to be there":eyes:

9. LOL Know about those, you just had to be there times...
glad you got out alive. Did they glow in the dark? LOL
Being serious, this country seems to be a on a highway to hell. Either someone else is going to blow us up, or we will just do it ourselves.
