The new layoffs followed the loss of more than 600 positions at the hospital, the A. Holly Paterson nursing home in Uniondale and at several community health clinics over the past 2 1/2 years.

Jane D'Amico, president of the Nassau chapter of the Civil Service Employees Association, said, "I'm outraged, angry and frustrated that they continue to mismanage the institution, give themselves a raise and lay off custodians who make $25,000 a year."

The year-end pay increase was a prorated share of an annual raise of $125,000 that was awarded in February 2003. His (chief executive) salary jumped from $200,000 to $325,000.
