N. Korea next to hear U.S. war drum
N. Korea next to hear U.S. war drum
By GEOFFREY YORK
From Thursday's Globe and Mail

Beijing — A senior Pentagon adviser has given details of a war strategy for invading North Korea and toppling its regime within 30 to 60 days, adding muscle to a lobbying campaign by U.S. hawks urging a pre-emptive military strike against Pyongyang's nuclear facilities.

Less than four months after the end of the Iraq war, the war drums in Washington have begun pounding again. A growing number of influential U.S. leaders are talking openly of military action against North Korea to destroy its nuclear-weapons program, and even those who prefer negotiations are warning of the mounting danger of war.

Some analysts predict that North Korea could test a nuclear warhead by the end of this year — an event that could cross the "red line" that would provoke a U.S. attack.

The tensions were heightened by a recent exchange of gunfire across the border between North Korean and South Korean soldiers. Talks between U.S. and North Korean officials are expected to be held in Beijing soon, but nobody is predicting an imminent diplomatic agreement, especially after North Korea denounced a U.S. negotiator as a "bloodsucker" and "human scum."

looks like we know what AWOL is doing during his summer vacation....

5. Question:
with our forces deployed as they are, how are we going to effectively deal with a hostile military that possibly approaches one million strong? Surely we can't be thinking of using unconventional weapons?

7. I wish I could express surprise, but
when it comes to Bush and war, my face just doesn't have that ability anymore. I think my eyebrows have become paralyzed.

We all knew it would only be a matter of time. Just like little boys with toys-they get bored with one quickly and want to move on to the next. Unfortunately, with W, his toys are big weapons involved in big wars:nuke:. If it wasn't North Korea, it'd be that nasty little African country or somewhere else that pissed him off (in that sick little feeble mind he posesses).

I'm sure he's just bummed that he hasn't found a way to bomb France yet, but I'd bet you he's got somebody working on it.

So, I have one question though, did we ever find Osama Binladen? Whatever happened to him?

8. Does anyone know
or is there a way to find out, where US warships are located at the moment? I think it would be a good idea to find out if we are starting to beef up our 'presence in the region' this month.

BTW: We need to wake up our reps to what is going on here. Please folks, do what you can. This is way too important to let these wackos get away with any more of their evil plans.

9. I'm puzzled

they keep saying that if we attack N.Korea then N.K will attack S.Korea.

Why would they do that? N. and S. are trying to mend relations.

seems like attacking the attacker would be what they should do.

Or, when they say the NK would attack SK they mean only the DMZ would get attacked and not all of S.K.

13. N Korea probably wouldn't want to attack S Korea,
especially now that the President of S Korea is no longer a puppet installed by the US. BUT a lot of the US bases for attacking the North (if we do--God forbid) are in S Korea and in Japan. The biggest US military base in S Korea is smack-dab in the very center of Seoul. If attacked, and trying to fight back, N Korea would probably see no choice but to target Yongsan base in Seoul, as well as all the other bases (especially airforce bases I would guess). The other "bases" would be aircraft carriers I suppose. We don't have the Philippines bases that we used to have, but I suppose we could force them to let us refuel, etc. there if necessary.

But this is all MUCH too horrible to comtemplate. If the warmongers are allowed to take over the coming talks, however, they may just torpedo them, hoping that N Korea will do something stupid that would allow them to attack. They seem to be thinking this would be like Afganistan--essentially a "painless" air war. They are WRONG, but they are now so out of touch with reality, and so puffed up with their success in hijacking US foreign policy, that they must be assumed to be capable of any insanity.

I don't want to live in their PNAC world! :scared:

Agreed wholeheartedly.

The alliance of the American neocon mind with its calculating bloodlusts and the fundamentalist Christian mind with its romanticization of Armageddon is probably at once the greatest threat to life on earth, since both mindsets regard violence as the inevitable step toward fulfillment of destiny. These are death cults, after all.

10. Dubya, you're overcompensating for Viet Nam!
Okay, so you decided to embroil the U.S. in another Viet Nam because you deserted during the real VN war. Isn't that enough for you? Do you have to start a second Korean War as well -- and a potentially nuclear one, this time?

What next? Invade Poland? And then assassinate an archduke in Sarajevo? Well, then you'll be able to stop: you'll have undone the entire 20th century and taken us back to the 19th. That's the neocons' wet dream, after all.

Oh, wait. There's that slavery thing. Gotta undo that other big war, too.

16. I agree--I think they know they have to some precipitate this one.
I think that's why Bolton made such outrageous attacks on Kim Jong-il last week. They really are trying to make N Korea crazy enough to do something stupid.

I've been wondering if Russia didn't give N Korea some assurance of support, and that's why they did agree to the talks even after what Bolton said. It's pretty clear that it's the US that doesn't want to deal--so what happens if the US is called on this? No matter what the neo-cons say, IMO they don't really care about the nukes--they just want to use that issue to get "regime change." I know the N Korean nuclear program is more real than Iraq's was, but it is similarly being lied about, exaggerated, blown up to absurd proportions.

Personally, I don't believe that N Korea has the capacity to nuke the US. But even if they did, the same argument that the anti-war people used for Iraq applied here as well. There is no way that N Korea could see doing this as helpful to them, UNLESS they were attacked first. In the case of Iraq, even attack didn't lead the use of WMDs. It could be the same in N Korea. But who wants to find out the hard way?

The problem with all these discussions is that the basic premises of the PNACers are SO unreasonable, so contrary-to-fact, that there's no reasoning with them. They need to be removed from power ASAP. (But how???)

"They have no intention of going to Congress, the UN or even to the American people for approval this time."

Going to Congress is Constitutionally mandated. The UN does not matter. There are no provisions anywhere in any documents of freedom that say we must consult with th UN.We are not going to launch a preemtive strike on NK. The result would be devastaton for NK and SK...not to mention the entire pacific basin....

14. I don't buy it.
The author of the article has added 2 + 2 and come up with 100. Just a bunch of old stuff and a headline designed to get a lot of clicks.

Of course I would never underestimate the stupidity of this bunch in Washington, but to attack NK with our forces already stretched and our stores of weapons depleted would be ridiculous even for them.

15. after the "....go it alone" bushit in Iraq
and AWOL not going to the UN for assistance in Iraq NOW...

How would the UN view us pre-empting North Korea? Will AWOL go to the UN or will he just "...go it alone..." again.

personally I thought that AWOL should have been handed a rifle and dumped into the middle of Baghdad - then he could really have gone at it alone...

17. *sigh*
My mom is coming from Seattle to Montana in two weeks for our wedding. I thin I may urge her to stay here if things get worse. She won't of course, last time Bush talked big on North Korea I told her to get everyone in a car and come here if things got bad. She laughed it off :-P She's a liberal Republican who thinks no one should pay taxes for anything, but that Bill Clinton is the anti-Christ, but still thinks Bush is pretty much an idiot.

19. Lemme get this straight...
what NK wants from the US is an official, written promise that we won't invade and occupy their country. Yet because a few nut-f*cking-cases in the larger squirrelcage of the Pentagon have a hankering for more war, we're refusing to tell them we won't invade. Is that it?

That a-hole, Kim Jong "Ill" needs to be taken out, but it should be done by his own people. Then again, I heard a speech by folks who escaped (yes, escaped, no one is allowed to leave) that country. The stories they told made the hair on my arms stand on end. It is, indeed, hell on earth.
