FACTBOX-NGOs respond to Haiti/Dominican floods

LONDON (AlertNet) - Following is a list of nongovernmental organisations responding to the humanitarian crisis caused by severe floods and landslides in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Rescue workers were still digging through mud and debris for bodies three days after torrential rains sent rivers of mud and swirling waters through Hispaniola, the Caribbean island shared by the two countries.


Action by Churches Together (ACT) – Switzerland
*ACT member Social Service of the Dominican Churches distributing food, clothing, medicine and water in the Dominican Republic. ACT members in Haiti assessing needs for possible response.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) - USA
*Emergency provision of food, water and other relief items in the Dominican Republic’s southwestern region of Barahona and in Haiti east of the border toward the city of Jacmel.

Dominican Red Cross National Relief and Emergency Programme
*Conducting search and rescue, recovering bodies, providing pre-hospital and out-of-hospital care and evaluating damage and needs.

Food for the Hungry International
*FHI’s office in Dominican Republic working with local partners to distribute food, water, clothing and bedding.

Oxfam International
*Working with local partner Ceajuri to distribute water and food to more than 4,000 peopl evacuated from border town of Jimani.

Télécoms Sans Frontières (TSF) – France
*Setting up telecommunications centres to help rescue teams coordinate activities and let survivors call relatives.
