Interim Iraqi Government May Be Delayed
Interim Iraqi Government May Be Delayed

United Press International

U.N. special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is not expected to meet a self-imposed May 31 deadline for naming members of an Iraqi interim government.

He said the government might not be announced until the first week of June, the Washington Times reported Thursday.

Brahimi has been consulting with scores of religious, political and tribal leaders in the past three weeks.

Once a government is announced, most likely in Baghdad, Brahimi will fly to New York to brief the U.N. Security Council.

Asked whether Washington would veto anyone on the list it does not like, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said that White House envoy Robert Blackwill, who is working alongside Brahimi, and L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. civilian administrator of Iraq, would make sure no undesirable figures were chosen.

A possible, dare I say even a probable, scenario is that:

the US resolution requesting extension of immunity for war crimes prosecution the US was forced to pull due to lack of votes cannot garner enough votes to pass and so expires on June 30, 2004

the vote on the US/British resolution on the hand-over in Iraq for June 30, 2004 is delayed beyond June 30, 2004

without either resolution passing by June 30, 2004, the US remains legally responsible as the "occupying power" to ensure the conditions listed in the Geneva Conventions are met and, without the protection of the immunity resolution, if the conditions are NOT met then the US (bush admin) can be tried for war crimes.

Hmmmm, UN should stall, imo.

Edited to add: (bush admin) to clarify to whom I was referring.

6. Do you think it would last as long as the Wiemar Republic?
With worse things to follow?

Any interrim government that is hand picked by the US bodes ill for Iraq's future - and will be very short lived. My sense is that it is unhealthy to have direct connections to anything sponsored by the US.

9. "Make sure no undesirable figures were chosen."
I wish L. Paul Bremer had been able to do that in 2000.
