Officials defend terror attack warning

By CURT ANDERSON

5/27/2004, 6:13 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI and Justice Department officials Thursday defended their decision to warn the public about the potential for a devastating terrorist attack on America this summer, saying it was justified by intelligence and essential to avoid missteps that occurred before the Sept. 11 attacks.

Their defense came amid criticism from lawmakers and some Bush administration officials with access to the same intelligence. They said Wednesday's announcement by Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller was overblown and caused unnecessary public concern.

Republican Rep. Christopher Cox of California, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said the Ashcroft-Mueller news conference mistakenly led some to believe the nation's threat level had been increased. He called it "regrettable" that Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge did not join Ashcroft and Mueller. "Their separate public appearances left the impression that the broad and close interagency consultation we expect — and which the law requires — may not have taken place in this case," Cox said.

Homeland Security Department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse reiterated Thursday his agency has not seen any change in the "steady stream of threat reporting. We do not have any new intelligence or specific information about al-Qaida planning an attack," he said.

The only reason for this drivilling from Ashcroft is the hope of distracting the media and the people from the current coverage of the torture of Iraqi prisoners and the plummeting stock of the criminals of the '00 Coup with the voters. There is no particular increase in danger compared to last week; there is no particular intelligence indicating any planned strike nears; there are no new al Queda operatives identified as being at large today in the United States.

This is nothing but a deliberate attempt to manipulate news coverage and the people's fears. It is disgusting and shameless and probably futile....

6. Flop sweat
Both Lou Dobbs and our local news last night were speculating that the warnings were motivated more by politics than security. Their failures have created a whirlpool of more and more failure. Everything they try backfires.

I think comedians call the phenomenon "flop sweat." A sense of desperation that makes everything you do make matters worse. We're seeing it in this bunch of murderous clowns, and it couldn't happen to a better flock of bastards.

8. I'd be afwaid if I was them too
Went to a Kerry meetup in Sarasota FL tonight and met some hard core repubs who are voting for Kerry. There are now more registered Dems in Fl than Repubs.

They need terror threats. They're losing control.
