Soldier in Lynch's unit thought killed in action had been captured...
Edited on Thu May-27-04 06:57 PM by MaineDem
PORTLAND, Ore., May 27 — A soldier initially listed as killed in action while riding in the same doomed convoy as former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch actually had been captured by Iraqi fighters before he was killed, the Oregon National Guard said Thursday.

More than a year after the March 23, 2003, ambush, the military released new details to the family of Sgt. Donald Walters of Salem, Ore.

Walters ''was held separately from his fellow soldiers and killed while in custody,'' according to a news release from the National Guard.

''He was executed — shot twice in the back,'' Guard spokesman Maj. Arnold Strong said in a telephone interview Thursday. ''An Iraqi ambulance driver witnessed six fedayeen rebels standing outside a building guarding him while he was still alive. That same witness evacuated his dead body to a hospital.''

1. when I was a young soldier
there was a saying that was often used,

"Payback is a motherfucker."

Watch out, Sgt. Donald Walters.

And remember, Sergeant, when they are shoving lightbulbs up your ass,
it's just a "fraternity prank".

10. This Sergeant was apparently
the only member of the unit who fought back effectively, and if I remember correctly he fought until he ran out of ammo.

This was a soldier, unlike some who are in the news wearing green clothes.

I'd say that this is the extreme, but no doubt they'll go lower tomorrow.

4. Bullshit
Desperate bullshit, actually, as the stream of corpses come flowing out of the US prison camps (which don't even deserve the dignity of being called POW camps given the murderous actions of the interrogators and guards).

Bush is a liar.

5. Must be the same fedayeen rebels who sodomized Lynch
Six fedayeen, yet he was shot twice. Think about it.

of someone being shot twice in the back during an ambush?

6. It's those bad bad fedayeen rebels again
The government/press just would like to take a monment to remind us how much better off the world is now that that madman Saddam is gone, regardless.

7. His mother did several TV interviews at
the time trying to get info about him and saying others had said it was probably him instead of Lynch that had done what was being said about Lynch. His mother was trying to get due recognition for him without taking anything from Lynch. She was wanting to know what happened. It's a shame she wasn't told before now.

9. What is this about
I'm sure his family wanted to know what happened to him, but this administration is so shameless in their information management that it is impossible not to suspect their motives every time they say something.

So this sounds like another batch of "they are worse than us" ammunition for the "moral relativists" in the Republican party.

13. The Bastards!
Why don't them Iraqis just stop this shit? Why don't they just let the US paid mercenaries come in there and steal their national wealth so the US can use the proceeds to pay the mercenaries to kill, torture, and rape Iraqis? Why won't they just cooperate? Them Iraqis should just leave. Why do they hate us?

14. Odd way to execute someone
"Defense investigators confirmed the account by matching Walters' DNA to blood splatter on the wall where he was executed, Strong said. He died from two gunshot wounds to the back, fired from more than 20 feet away, according to Strong's account of the investigation findings."

This sounds more like "shot while trying to escape". Isn't execution usually at close range, through the head, or the heart?

"He was executed — shot twice in the back,'' Guard spokesman Maj. Arnold Strong said in a telephone interview Thursday. ''An Iraqi ambulance driver witnessed six fedayeen rebels standing outside a building guarding him while he was still alive. That same witness evacuated his dead body to a hospital."

"An Army report released last summer on the ambush of the 507th Army Maintenance Company said that Walters, 33, likely died in the fighting that left 10 other soldiers dead. The report said there were no American witnesses to his death."

So, only the hearsay of an unknown Iraqi witness to go on. He could be made up, tortured, or bribed to give this account. Let's face it, this is an awfully convenient story to come out now - the meme is more or less "they shoot prisoners, we only 'abuse' them". The military has been caught in too many lies to make this story credible.

18. I Think You May be EXACTLY Right
Your scenario fits what's known FAR better than some half-assed "execution". This guy fought, hard, when the rest of his Unit, including his Commander, were running around examining their colons. If he was captured after running out of ammo he is the type of soldier, having read the Code of Conduct, who would have tried to escape.

Executions are not done from 20+ feet away with shots to the back, they are done at 6 inches with a shot to the back of the head.

From the available evidence, this was a SOLDIER in every sense of the word. He fought as long as he had anything to fight with, and when captured tried to escape. I am proud as a blue-striped bantam rooster that the Army I served in still produces soldiers like this.

19. This Story from July
might shed some light...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2003/07/27/wjess27.xml&sSheet=/news/2003/07/27/ixworld.html

I doubt he was ever captured. He may have taken the leg wound first, then somebody got behind him and hit him twice in the back and the first fedayeen who got to him stuck him with a bayonet.

15. How many dead Americans and Iraqis is BushCo going to use
in his attempt to turn around his bad poll numbers? It is a disgusting image, the one of Bush cowering behind these dead bodies pleading for everyone to like him again.

17. Yet they didn't hurt Lynch at all? The timing of this story is amazing.
What do you think they gave this witness for his story?

And do you think the price went up in the last few weeks?
