Janklow Pardoned Son-In-Law's 3 DUIs
Edited on Thu May-27-04 07:33 PM by plastic_turkeys
PIERRE, S.D. - Former Gov. Bill Janklow pardoned his son-in-law in 2002 for three drunken-driving and marijuana-possession convictions, according to documents unsealed Thursday on orders from South Dakota's highest court. All together, 218 previously sealed pardons were made public, after the practice of keeping such actions secret was challenged by news organizations. All but four of the pardons were issued by Janklow.

In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Janklow said he had no idea the pardons could not be legally sealed and that feels "heartsick" for people whose pardon information has been released. Janklow said he pardoned his son-in-law after he assured the governor he had turned his life around....

Among the records released Thursday was Janklow's 2002 pardon of William Gordon Haugen II, who is married to Janklow's daughter, Shonna. The pardon covered drunken driving convictions in 1983 and in 1997, and a 1993 conviction for marijuana possession.

Yes, I lived in South Dakota for six years as a young child. My oldest Brother graduated from the School of Mines, Rapid City. Another Brother retired as a Capt. at the "big house" (US SD State penitentiary) and still resides in Sioux Falls, SD. Nice to see someone from those parts besides the lion's share of my cousins. :-)

On topic: Bill Janklow is one of the most, if not THE most connected politician in South Dakota. He's notorious for his good-ole-boy status permitting him to avoid prosecution on a number of his criminal antics that date back to 1955.

IMO Bill Janklow's pond scum.

17. That's why he got off...
Hell, Janklow practically worked with or intimidated every lawyer and judge in the damn state. No wonder he only got 100 days.
There's a few South Dakotans on this board. Check out the State forums and say hi to those that are still stuck in there.

10. He even pardoned his lawyer
One of the most notable names on the list is Jerus Campbell, a former chief legal counsel for Janklow who was in charge of the governor's pardons program.

Campbell, who works for Valley Bank in Sioux Falls, was pardoned for two separate offenses.

He was convicted of driving while intoxicated in Hand County in 1981 and of disorderly conduct in Tripp County in 1997.

Campbell's father, Ron, a lawyer in Miller, also received a pardon from Janklow. He was convicted of DWI in Hand County in 1982.

11. I think the poeple of the people and by the people
must be able to review all pardons by congressmen and senators. This is a travesty of justice.

...and we wonder why terrorist are running loose in the world.

12. Thanks to plastic_turkeys and suegeo for being rays of sunshine
to some Democrats who have been following Bill Janklow's charmed existance: getting a slight wrist slap for killing a man.

Learning about his pardons is something which will put Janklow in perspective for his state's benefit. It will also cast a light on the buttheads who have been hanging out with him while he has been passing out favors.

This is GREAT NEWS.

22. Janklow would surely also have pardoned non-family members
with DUI and drug convictions had they given similar assurances of having cleaned up their act: as much pleasure I would get calling Mr. J a rotten SOB, that would be neither nice nor politically correct, so I won't.

24. What absolute scum!
This blatant favoritism could cost someone their life. Oh wait, his stupidity already did that.

I can't believe he's already out of jail - has at least another 20 years coming - I can only hope he will serve them in hell.
