1. SA diplomat mysteriously disappears in Malaysia
Malaysian police has made a public appeal for help to find a senior South African diplomat who has been reported missing in that country, and refused to rule out the possibility he had been kidnapped.

Deputy High Commissioner Nicky Scholtz (54) was last seen on Sunday night in his hotel room in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian police and South African officials said.

South African officials lodged a missing persons report for Scholtz, whose full name is Cornelius van Niekerk Scholtz, with Malaysian police on Wednesday after their own investigations drew a blank, the foreign affairs ministry said.

Police called a news conference on Saturday to distribute photographs of Scholtz and make their appeal for information, but declined to give details of the case.
"We seek the help of any members of the public who have information about Mr Scholtz to contact the police," said Hadi Ho Abdullah, police chief at the downtown Dang Wangi district.

2. SA diplomat disappeared 'during late walk'
By Peter Fabricius

A senior South African diplomat has been missing in Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia, since Sunday night when he went for walk from his hotel.

Foreign minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma announced on Friday that Nicky Scholtz, 54, deputy high commissioner to Malaysia, had not been seen since he left his hotel at 9pm.

"Investigations by the High Commissioner, Dr Abe Nkomo, in liaison with the hotel management, have so far drawn a blank," Dlamini-Zuma said.

"Dr Nkomo has referred the matter to the Malaysian law enforcement agencies for further investigation."

Anil Sooklal, deputy director-general for the Middle East and Asia in the foreign affairs department, said Scholtz, a former SA ambassador to Taiwan, had only been posted to Malaysia recently and was still living in the Hotel Nikko.

3. Diplomat Scholtz's brutal treatment revealed
Kuala Lumpur - Senior South African diplomat Nicky Scholtz was bound with wire, beaten and repeatedly tortured during a week of captivity after being seized by kidnappers from one of the Malaysian capital's busiest streets, South African officials said Tuesday.

Scholtz's captors, who thought he was a tourist, extorted thousands of dollars and threatened to kill him if he told anyone about the attack, the latest in a series of security scares that have sent jitters through the diplomatic corps in Malaysia, which prides itself as a placid, tourist-friendly place.

Scholtz was kidnapped on May 23, less than a month after arriving in Malaysia to take up a posting as his country's No. 2 diplomat. He walked into the High Commission at around dawn seven days later after his captors handed him money for a taxi and released him.
