NYT- U.N. Envoy Picks Iraqi With Close U.S. Ties to Be Premier
~snip~
The decision to name Dr. Allawi was made by Lakhdar Brahimi, the United Nations envoy, and the governing council was then summoned to be informed of the choice. The council more or less showed its approval, some officials said, with one member saying the decision was unanimous. But other people said a vote did not really take place, because the decision had already been made.

L. Paul Bremer III, the occupation's senior official in Iraq, came in later and gave the council his congratulations, but no formal announcement has been made; it is expected to come in the next several days. Dr. Allawi, a member of the council, has not spoken publicly about the appointment.

A number of other key decisions remain to be made by Mr. Brahimi, including the naming of a president, who is likely to be a Sunni, two deputy presidents and other cabinet members. But the prime minister's post will be the most influential.

This guy is going down. Sooner or later he will be blown to Bits. Or his Masters at the CIA will turn on him.

He will be like the Mayor of Kabul--the laughing stock of the citizens.

5. more: U.S., U.N. Blindsided on Iraq PM Announcement
~snip~
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - When word surfaced in Baghdad on Friday that Iyad Allawi would lead Iraq (news - web sites)'s interim government, confusion reigned both in Washington and at the United Nations (news - web sites), despite President Bush (news - web sites)'s assurances of an orderly handover.

~snip~

Nearly three hours later Brahimi gave his endorsement to Allawi through a spokesman. It took a full three additional hours for a senior administration official in Baghdad, who spoke on condition of anonymity, to confirm that Allawi would be interim prime minister.

~SNIP~

But those comments came only after a series of U.S. officials had told reporters that as far as they knew, the selection process was not yet complete.

"Mr. Brahimi has not put forward, to the best of my knowledge, a name of -- final recommendations for the interim Iraqi government," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters

11. WH praises selection of Iraqi exile as PM-checkout Scott's flipflops
~snip~
''He is certainly a fine and capable leader who appears to have broad support among the Iraqi people,'' spokesman Scott McClellan said of Iyad Allawi, who was chosen by the Iraqi Governing Council.

The White House had said earlier in the day that Allawi was just one of many candidates and the council was one of many groups offering names. Secretary of State Colin Powell, early in the day, had said the United States had ''no position on any candidate at this moment.''

The mixed message underscored unanswered questions in the countdown to the June 30 transfer of political power from the U.S.-led coalition to a caretaker government. A major unresolved issue is the extent of Iraqi control over the roughly 135,000 U.S. troops who will remain in Iraq after the transfer. The White House says the soldiers will remain under the command of an American general.

For weeks, the administration has insisted that the selection of Iraq's new government would be made by U.N. envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who has led the process for drawing up the new government. The administration held off a formal endorsement of Allawi, saying it wanted to hear from Brahimi. But its public embrace left no question about U.S. support.

8. honestly, I don't think the US, UN or Iraqi council have a clue to what's
going on. Or should I say what's going to be leaked to the press.

9. This chap is known well among Iraqis as CORRUPT!
I just caught that on NPR. Apparently many in Iraq know of Allawi and his ability to take money and do what he is told. He also has many relatives working as middle men throughout all of these new Iraq ministries set up by the CPA. Yeah, that'll work! :eyes:

10. I remember reading a quote somewhere...
It applied to Chalabi but also to his relatives. Including this guy, and his cousin the defense minister.

"Even by the standards of the Middle East, the commissions were high."

Just the way it was said...

14. BBC World said that Brahimi was caught off guard...
said British were saying that he picked him, but it was just glossing things over. In fact, the BBC World report (on PBS) said that Brahini wasn't even in the room during the announcement........

16. NYT commitment to accurate journalism didn't last long
The more I read, the more clear it is that this was not the U.N. envoy's choice, but the U.S. choice. And by the sounds of it, a very bad one. He was supposed to be the source of the "45 minutes to WMD doom" claim - if WMD are found in the runup to the U.S. election, this will give me even more reason to believe they were planted.
