With a half dozen political campaigns behind him,Wayne Sowell ranks on paper among the most experienced political candidates in Alabama.
In reality, the Birmingham Democrat is seen by most observers as the longest of longshots in his high profile race so far:a challenge to three-term US Sen. Richard Shelby,R-Tuscaloosa.Democrat leaders politely discount his chances.Sowell references the possibility of devine assistance.

1. Shelby, former Democrat, shouldn't have ever been OUR candidate.
He was a Democrat elected as part of our great gains in 1986. I was 12, but I clearly remember being happy about the election result since I really disliked Reagan, to say the least. Anyway, I recell an article enthusing over Shelby showing that the Democrats can run a conservative candidate who could defeat a GOP incumbant in a place like AL. Well, a lot of good it has done us!

4. Its more then cute
to some of us Alabamians.

If Sowell can get the 35% of Alabama citizens, whom claim they are Democrats to the poll, with a 5-10% crossover among the Republicans and Indys he could upset Shelby.Democrat leaders in Alabama are sitting on thier hands and money, they don't envision a race at all.
Also with some help,Sowell could also help Kerry steal the State out from under the Bush camp.I know the Republicans won't spend a dime here, thinking they have it in the bag.Shelby doesn't even have a campaign headquarters,he thinks he can win without doing anything but sitting on his pompas ass.
Kerry could be the winner even if Wayne Sowell loses.

6. His Ideas are very Progressive
They don't want to be recognized as being in favor of decriminalzation of Pot.They don't care if it will solve the overcrowding prison problem. The LEO's and Lawyers Union doesn't want to lose the cash cow. Also Wayne isn't tied politically to the two big Black Democratic orgs;Ala.Dem Conf and New South Coalition.
