A Saddam Souvenir
President Bush keeps the former dictator's pistol at arm's reach

When Saddam Hussein was rousted from his spider hole in Dawr, a town near Tikrit, by U.S. soldiers last December, Iraq's fallen dictator was clutching a pistol. He is now in detention at an undisclosed location, being questioned by American authorities and awaiting charges for war atrocities and crimes against humanity. But what ever happened to the pistol?

The sidearm has made its way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Sources say that the military had the pistol mounted after the soldiers seized it from Saddam and that it was then presented to the President privately by some of the troops who played a key role in ferreting out the old tyrant. Though it was widely reported at the time that the pistol was loaded when they grabbed Saddam, Bush has told visitors that the gun was empty—and that it is still empty and safe to touch. "He really liked showing it off," says a recent visitor to the White House who has seen the gun. "He was really proud of it."

6. ALL terrorists and warmongers should be locked up.
And Bush is no exception, not in the slightest. Until the LIHOP information came out a few months ago, more people probably thought he was just a madman out for a little revenge and big abuse of power. LIHOP (and MIHOP isn't beyond a reasonable doubt either, what with secret energy meetings and an Afghani pipeline deal that went awry and such...) shows * is as much a terrorist as the rest of them. Worse as he did an end-run around the American people by allowing the destruction of American people and property.

Why don't you also show people how small your dick is too, putting up a disclaimer sign at the front wall saying "Bring your own microscope"?

Why should the President of the United States receive this as a "gift" from his soldiers?
It seems that it should have been in save keeping(ha) with the Department of Defense or another agency of our government.

It makes me sad that this clown is using this gun as a toy and showing off to his friends.

This lack of ability to make wise decisions never stops with Chimp.

If that gun is displayed on any wall, it should be a wall in the Smithsonian, not in the Oval Office.

Carrying Saddam's pistol must make the little bush feel like a big man.

I would imagine that Saddam's gun that he possessed when he was captured is worth a huge amount! How in the hell can they just "give"it to the President.

If anything, the gun either belongs to the government of Iraq or our government.

He needs to give up the pistol immediately!

39. It is legal, as long as it is registered as a gift. Technically it is
his, but he cannot dispose of it without the authority of the Smithsonian or National Archives or some such.

If he takes it when he leaves, and the court that convicts him of war crimes lets him keep guns around, when he dies, misrable, alone, drunk, and crying (we hope) it will go to an appropriate museum.

But Rumsfield still has his piece of the Pentagon . . . doesn't he? No one in New York could keep part of the WTC nor could anyone else keep part of the Pentagon; however, these war mongers sure like there little trophies. Do you think Rumsfield's is a trophy or a remembrance? I think it is a trophy to that mission being accomplished.

that USED to be his prized possessions.

i met billy gibbons in person (quite an affable character), and when i asked him about the baseball and picture of shrub with billy and dusty, he abruptly changed the subject. he seemed embarrassed that bush prized anything associated with his band.

it figures that bush would hang on to such a poignant souvenir, the symbol of his downfall. he's finally "disarmed" Saddam. poor georgie. "i destroyed Iraq and all i got was this lousy t-shirt."

31. Well I guess HIS mission was accomplished. . .
after all. All he wanted was Saddam and to take over control of the oil. Speaking of which, where has all that oil gone to? Anyone know?

Yeah, he is a real tough guy. I can just see when the British Prime Minister Tony Blair came in for a visit. Dubya tells him he has a surprise for him. Walks him over to the room of oral gratification. Tony Blair starts to get excited but then, Bush points out the gun of Saddam. Whoop-de-friggin-doo.

He needs to be reminded that the gun is the property of the USA. Not Bush or poppie. When he leaves, the gun should go to the Smithsonian or to the Pentagon for archival purposes.

Yeah, he's a big man alright. Cost 800 Americans their lives but he got ole Saddam and control over the oil. That is why he has no other strategy for this war. He has gotten what he wants . . .to the rest of the soldiers still there . . . you are on your own guys!

Trophy guns of an "enemy tyrant" kept in the White House - this is just not the sort of thing that a mature adult would do.

On edit - this could be a bit of magical thinking. By possessing Saddam's personal weapon, he possesses Saddam's power. It doesn't seem to be helping in Iraq though, given the security situation.

Also, Saddam's gun could well have been used to kill one or more people, if we believe the western propoganda about Hussein. Many have said Bush has a sort of death obsession, so possessing Saddam's gun may reveal deep psychological tendencies.

52. It depends on what the war trophy was.
a Pistol can generally be kept as a war trophy, but an AK cannot be brought back into the US as a war trophy, since possession of it would violate the National Firearms Act.

As for taking stuff off of prisoners, it depends on what it is. If it's a gun, obviously taking it is required, not just encouraged. If it's a watch or jewelry, you can't take it.

But in that war they were real specific: do not collect souvenirs. You could buy stuff--my brother bought some prayer rugs, but he was on Bahrain--but you couldn't pick up stuff off the battlefield.

76. Violation of DC and federal gun laws
I haven't seen any claim that the pistol was altered to make it non-functional. It's a violation of DC gun laws to have an unregistered pistol in the city. And it's a violation of federal law to have a gun in a federal building (unless you're a law enforcement officer). I guess the law only matters when it favors the administration.

58. It's only a temporary measure. After Saddam dies,
Bush can have his head mounted.

61. Bush, sit on that pistol and rotate. How proud he is, huh?
So many of our young men and women are dying over there as well as innocent Iraqis and he's playing cowboy. Schmuck.

that shrub keeps his stuff in the room made infamous by Clinton's trysts with Monica.

What in the hell does that have to do with anything?

I guess it is Clinton's fault that shrub has Saddam's gun. Why not? Everything else is Clinton's fault.

66. That gun belongs to the Iraqi people.
But no surprise here because so should the oil. But it doesn't.

* is a sadistic SOB and probably has a piece of the WTC on his desk too.

69. Saddam's gun should be a reminder of how this war has been a farce!
Edited on Mon May-31-04 02:11 PM by Bullshot
In the months leading up to the war in Iraq, Bush and his stooges went state-to-state telling how Saddam had access to WMDs and was in cahoots with Osama bin Laden.

Where did they find Hussein? In a spider hole, carrying nothing but an UNLOADED GUN. If Saddam was so dangerous and had access to weapons, why didn't he set them off? Why was there no retaliation?

I'm convinced that America's been dumbed down by the right wing talk shows and other media. Nobody can critically think or analyze for themselves, even if the evidence is in plain sight in front of their faces anymore. These people will dismiss the recent news on the total mismanagement of this war as "liberal media bias."

Back on the farm, if we had hogs that acted this dumb, they'd get a 2 x 4 between the eyes until they understand how things are. It's too bad you can't do that to some people.

70. I wonder what kind of message this sends to the Iraqi people?
Instead of flinging Saddam's pistol into the trash and proclaiming that Iraq will never again be ruled by a weapon-obsessed tyrant, "Liberator" Bush starts fondling that gun!

He kept Saddam's prison operating too, didn't he.

73. Terry Moran Reported for ABC News on it tonight
And took oh-so-subtle pains to let viewers know it's kept in the room where Clinton was doing Monica.

77. Someone should give Bush some bullets...
But I'll bet the Secret service would take them away. Bush seems to be the kind of guy who would have an accident... he can't even be trusted with pretzels.
