North Korea a "far more compelling threat" than Iraq: Kerry
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20040530/ts_alt_afp/us_vote_kerry_iraq_iran&cid=1506&ncid=1473

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s fixation on Iraq (news - web sites) has made the United States less safe and allowed North Korea (news - web sites) and Iran to pursue efforts to develop nuclear weapons, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) said in an interview.

"This administration has been almost myopic in its view on Iraq itself, to the exclusion of those things that are necessary to, in fact, make the world safer," the senator from Massachusetts told The New York Times.

"This administration is high on rhetoric and high on ideology and low on actual strategic thinking and truth," Kerry said.

"And the fact is that they have broken alliances across the planet that have served us well for years, they've left our reputation in tatters," he said. "There's no one who deals with the global community who doesn't understand the degree to which we've isolated ourselves, and I think we're less safe because of that."

1. Kerry's right, of course
But I hope he doesn't go into the politics of fear too much. I'd like to see him project a positive campaign of hope.

2. Why the hell does any nation have to be a threat to us?
Why can't we deal honestly with these people and resolve common problems and engage in mutual interests? Why does everything have to be a fucking war?!! Why do WE have to be 'superiror?'

3. Uh...because they are.
North Korea and Iran are SERIOUS threats to our security.

War is not the solution to all threats, but fightng a bullshit war against a country that WASN'T a major threat (i.e. Iraq) is one sure fire way to let the REAL threats become EVEN more dangerous.

8. NK would not need be the threat it is today
if DUMBYA and Co. hadn't actively sought to undermine the so-called Sunshine policy of the previous president Kim Dae Jung, which was aimed at enticing Pyongyang to open up the country to foreign investment with offers of aid and assistance.

By keeping political pressure on President Roh Moo Hyun the current Admin has not only exacerbated tensions between the two Koreas but, by squeezing SK for an Iraq troop deployment, has increased tensions within the Republic amongst its citizens opposed to perceived U.S. infringement on Korean sovereignty.

9. Right, we also breached the 1994 Agreed Framework
Edited on Sun May-30-04 02:57 PM by teryang
...the North Korean threat is primarily a proliferation threat. It was under control until our repudiation of the Agreed Framework.

Our breach which was evident in the failure to meet the construction schedule on light water power plants promised by us and paid for by the N. Koreans created bad faith and suspicion on both sides.

There isn't a military solution to the N.Korean situation. The more pressure we put on N.Korea, the more likely dangerous distribution of nuclear weapons materials becomes. The neo-cons think that economic and political pressure will result in the collapse of the north. It is a high risk approach with uncontrolled possibilities.

6. The Good Neighbor Policy
was applied only toward Latin American nations - and we didn't respect that policy very well in reality (instigating coups and such)

4. Oh good. Our troops are overextended in Bush's* war of CHOICE and now
Edited on Sun May-30-04 01:26 PM by HypnoToad
we've other countries which deserve to be fought. (on edit: Assuming they can't be convinced that our own evil empire has been dismantled. Which'll be hard, bushco* is far more than a massive military malfeasance, it also encompasses corporate america - which, these days, IS America. :scared: )

And it's no freedoming wonder N Korea's a threat. Bush*, typical toddler that he is, started name-calling its ruler and posturing up like a dick on viagra, ready to thrust if the right moment came along.

Kerry is utterly right in his statements. It's nice to hear somebody with brains and a grain or two of sanity to stand up against the mindless mess that has been created by the current Misadministration.

But should Kerry be elected, how is he going to deal with the monumental mess that King-Boy George* has haphazardly created? I'm not sure we want to know...

If Kerry wins, I'll feel sorry for him. For people will start blaming him, rather than Chimpzola*, for what's going on. If you don't hate Bush* now, you might a few months into Kerry's term, I fear...

If Bush* wins, I'll feel sorry for the Whole of Creation. (though I rather do already...)

7. not too long ago it was Russia
that was a dire threat, and in the future, I am certain that China will be annointed a threat for some reason that will be played up by the CIA propaganda operatives. Controlling the nuclear weapons--well, I think that is a straw man and a device on the part of Kerry in order to bring down Bush's absurd claims to be a leader, on the level of a Churchill. After Bush and his bloviating, bully talk, I would wonder about the leadership of any nation that did not seek to arm itself with nuclear weapons. Expecially one in the ME, where Israel possesses those weapons and wants to be the only kid on the block who has those toys.
