Cheney office denies role in Halliburton deal

E-mail cited by Time implies veep helped ex-employer get Iraq contract

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Vice President Dick Cheney's office denied Sunday that he was involved in a coordinated effort to secure a multibillion dollar Iraq oil deal for Halliburton, his former employer.

A reference to such an arrangement was made in an internal Pentagon e-mail from an Army Corps of Engineers official to another Pentagon employee, Time magazine reports in its June 7 edition, which is due on newsstands Monday.

The existence of the e-mail was confirmed to CNN by a senior administration official familiar with it.

The e-mail -- dated March 5, 2003 -- says Douglas Feith, undersecretary of defense for policy, approved the arrangement to award the contract to the oil-services company, the administration official said.

According to an e-mail excerpt in Time, the contract was "contingent on informing WH {White House} tomorrow. We anticipate no issues since action has been coordinated w{ith} VP's office."

1. One of two things happened:
1. Cheney's office was up to it's gimlet eyeballs in this thing and chopping Feith to "Do What Thou Wilt".

2. Or Lil' Dougy Feith was off the reservation. Again.

Any way you slice it, this is a maladministration that has no regard for appearences of propriety. The question is: How far will this go up the foodchain?

Edited on Mon May-31-04 07:40 AM by alg0912
...this doesn't surprise me at all. Crashcart has always operated under a different set of rules than most. And Doug Feith's name appears again.:eyes:

If we win the WH and Congress, I hope they get to the bottom of all of this. And, if Kerry (or any Dem, for that matter), in the "spirit of healing this divided nation" (ala Gerald Ford), fails to spearhead the investigations into every dirty deed performed by the GOP in the last four years, then I will vigorously campaign against them come the next elections. This, for the sake of the future of our country, needs to be exposed so it never happens again!!!:grr:

11. Yes, it will be interesting to see the list of names from those energy
meetings.

Could have Ken Lay been at those energy meetings? Or was "Kenny Boy" fishing for suckers with Scalia?

Particularly in light of recent developments.

25. Possibly. But Kenny Lay is the primary reason we invaded Afghanistan
He was losing his ass big-time in India and desparately needed that pipeline deal the Taliban turned down. Not to mention their plan to win the Asian market.

It could be very ineteresting to see the list of names and the agenda.

18. here's a tidbit for you
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/business/DailyNews/enron_cheneyletter020109.html

excerpt:

The close ties between the Bush administration and Enron come from a long- standing relationship, and campaign-finance watchdogs generally considered the company to have been Bush's most staunch benefactor.

According to the Center for Public Integrity, Enron has contributed more than $500,000 to Bush's political activities, starting with his gubernatorial campaigns.

As recently as October 16, with a crisis atmosphere swirling around Enron, the company gave $60,000 to the Republican National Committee.

Lay himself worked with the Bush transition team and helped screen candidates for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Bush's most prominent economic adviser, Larry Lindsey, and his point man on trade issues, Robert Zoellick, have both served as Enron advisers.

Lindsay received $50,000 from Enron for his services, while Bush's chief political strategist, Karl Rove, owned Enron stock while the energy task force was conducting its work. Rove sold his shares for $68,000 last June.

5. Memorial Day...probably not a lot of people catching the news today
This will get buried, I'm afraid. Although I was quite pleased to see the news outlets even covering the story.

This is impeachable, in my opinion. We (all Americans; I know the DUers already are) should be outraged.

6. Shit like this is at the top of the ethics "no-no" list...
My ex-wife was a newspaper reporter and won national awards for bringing to light the story of a local official who was steering city contracts right back to his piping business. He served 2 years in jail and paid back millions to the city.

9. Is this the beginning of Rove's big move on Cheyney? New VP coming.
This may well be the start of what will be a swift doing-in of his Cheyneyness to make way for a more politically useful VP candidate on shrubby's ticket.

There's too much evidence that this was a deliberate leak.

14. I've been saying for months that Cheney will NOT be on the ticket
This administration will do whatever it can to win - or should I say remain in power.

There are too many easy outs for Cheney beginning with his health. I think the Administration will see that they're not where they want to be and pull a surprise. Maybe a Rudy Guliani as Veep?

However, the reason will have to be medical or it will appear that the BFEE is caving to pressure. It may still look like that but the spin will be unbelievable. These people have no shame at all.

Email shows Cheney 'link' to oil contract

Suzanne Goldenberg in Washington
Tuesday June 1, 2004
The Guardian

The US vice-president, Dick Cheney, helped to steer through a huge contract for the reconstruction of Iraq's oil industry on behalf of his old firm, Halliburton, Time magazine reported yesterday.
The report, based on an internal Pentagon email, joins a steady stream of allegations of cronyism involving Halliburton. Since the fall of Saddam Hussein, the Houston company has won $17bn (£9bn) in contracts to rebuild Iraq, far outstripping its competitors.

Mr Cheney, who ran Halliburton for five years before he became George Bush's vice-president in 2000, has maintained that he severed all links to the company when he entered public life.

However, Time said it had obtained an internal email from a Pentagon official indicating that Mr Cheney's office had been intimately involved in awarding a multibillion-dollar contract for the restoration of Iraqi oil.

I sure, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, that Dickie-boy still has about 400,000 Halliburton stock options. That would be a 'tie', no?
