Formation of Iraqi government delayed
Last Updated Mon, 31 May 2004 7:34:09

BAGHDAD - A meeting of Iraq's Governing Council to finalize the interim government that takes power at the end of June has been delayed, amid reports of disagreements over who should be the country's president.

* INDEPTH: Iraq

The postponement was announced by three council members, including Mahmoud Othman. They gave no reason for the move.

Iyad Allawi: to be Iraq's P.M.
The delay means that the U.S.-led coalition and the United Nations will likely miss the end of May deadline they set themselves for announcing the government.

2. Iraq has suffered enough--don't do THAT!!
Although I might support sending him over to comb the sands for WMD--with a real, fine-toothed comb...

5. Nothing like throwing a little more gasoline on the situation
With this Allawi's known CIA connections he becoming Iraq's "interim" "president" are going to go over like a lead balloon. And octogenarian Pachachi favors Iraq becoming a US protectorate.

Iraqis distrust new leaders, analysts say
Many believe U.S. will be too powerful in the post-handover government

BAGHDAD -- When Iraq is given its long-awaited sovereignty on June 30, it is increasingly clear that very little will change on the ground.

The U.S.-led military coalition will remain in effective control of the country. Its troop strength will remain the same. And now it appears that Iraq's new government will be just a slightly reshuffled version of the unpopular U.S.-appointed council that currently heads the government.

Iraq handover on track: Myers
From correspondents in Washington
May 31, 2004

THE June 30 date for handover of authority in Iraq remains firm, the top US military officer said today, despite a bitter wrangle between rivals vying to become Iraq's first post-occupation president.

"Sovereignty will pass to Iraq no later than 30 June," said General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"The important thing to remember is that when sovereignty passes, Iraq will not be capable of providing for its own security," he told NBC television.

"They're going to need, and they will want the help of the coalition forces.

"Just remember the kind of situation we have: it's not just former regime elements in Iraq that are trying to stop progress, it's also some very serious terrorist groups that have international reach."

8. They're being DECISIVE, leading forcefully, staying the course
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead and all that.

After all, they've got an upcoming presidential election right here to manipulate.
