Archaeologists Dig Up World War II Plane
Archaeologists said Monday that they have unearthed parts of a World War II fighter plane that crashed after downing a German bomber near Buckingham Palace.
Archaeologist Christopher Bennett said the plane's engine and control panel were located late Sunday during excavations in Buckingham Palace Road in the center of the capital.

The Battle of Britain was raging over the skies of London when pilot Ray Holmes spotted the German Dornier bomber on Sept. 15, 1940.

Historians believe the German plane may have been on a mission to destroy Buckingham Palace.

3. This was a television event
last night. Everyone has known where the plane was I think, but trying to organise an archaelogical dig in the centre of London was fairly tricky. The Hurricane pilot was on the show last night. Apparently he was out of ammo when he spotted the Dornier heading towards Buckingham palace - so he chopped its tail off with his own plane - there is actual footage of the Dornier coming down.
Amazingly the Hurricane and the Dornier were the only planes to come down in the City of London during the entire war (the City is a very small area in the middle of London).
