Coalition rules out two main contenders for Iraq presidency
Edited on Mon May-31-04 10:50 AM by maddezmom
BAGHDAD (AFP) - The US-led coalition ruled out the two main Sunni Muslim contenders, Adnan Pachachi and Ghazi al-Yawar, in the race to become Iraq (news - web sites)'s first post-Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) president, a senior official told AFP.

"It is completely fabricated that it is a toss up between Yawar and Pachachi," said the official on condition of anonymity.

"We are looking for the president and two-thirds of the new ministers to be non-Governing Council members," he said, referring to Iraq's US-installed interim leadership.

He accused council members of "hijacking" the process of shaping the transitional government that is to take over from the coalition by June 30.

U.S. and U.N. officials have declined comment on the process of agreeing the government and presidency beyond saying that it is a broad consultative process not confined to the Governing Council. The body was appointed by the U.S. occupying power a year ago and is regarded by many Iraqis with suspicion.

The Governing Council caught Brahimi off-guard on Friday by announcing the nomination to the top job of prime minister of Iyad Allawi, a secular Shi'ite member of the Council who worked with the CIA from exile to overthrow Saddam. Brahimi and the White House later said they endorsed the appointment.

Despite Brahimi's suggestion some weeks ago that he would prefer to see an interim government of apolitical technocrats, the Council appears set on naming many of its own members to the new administration that will supersede it role on June 30.
