4. Yes...this story really stretches the envelope of time...
...putting it in perspective like you did:

Of four great-great-grandfathers to fight in the Civil War, two were from Kentucky with one fighting for the Union and dying in 1912, with one fighting for the Confederacy, date of death unknown. Two were from Virginia, both fighting for the Confederacy...one died in 1889, and the other died of disease in 1862 with his widow dying in 1882.

Two great-great-uncles also fought for the Confederacy, one's date of death is currently unknown, and the other died as a POW of dysentary at Fort Delaware in 1863 after being captured at Gettysburg.

3. NPR played a 1998 interview with her...
She was pretty frank in discussing her relationship--really rather amusing.
Go to NPR.org and give a listen if interested. It should be up later tonight.

11. interesting
these men lived through the civil war and the first world war, and the second world war. not to mention all the changes in technology through that time. i wonder how it would feel to actually be living through all that. not just read about it as we can all do now, but to live through it all.

13. It's interesting to think about
My great grandmother was born in 1894 and died in 1988. Think about how much history took place and how far technology advanced during those 94 years.

During her lifetime, technology went from horse drawn carriages to men walking on the moon. The Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam all happened during her lifetime. When she was born, Grover Cleveland was President of the United States. When she died, George H.W. Bush had just been elected.

It boggles the mind to think about.

12. Mrs. Martin and her husband did have a son
together. Then after Mr. Martin died, she remarried on of his grandsons.

Gives new meaning to that song, "I'm My Own Grandpa"
