Sharpton Admonishes Youth, Blacks to Vote
Presidential Elections - AP

SANTEE, S.C. - Democratic presidential candidate Al Sharpton on Sunday admonished a church congregation to avoid taking past civil rights gains for granted and play a more active role in current politics.

"Here you are 40 years later in South Carolina," he said. "Nobody's bombing your churches, no dogs (are) biting you, nobody's shooting you in the driveway. (You're) just too lazy and ungrateful to use something that folks died to give you the right to. Folks got to beg you to vote when others died to give you the right to vote."

The South Carolina primary Feb. 3 — after caucuses in Iowa and a primary in New Hampshire — will be the Democrats' first contest where there is a large black population. --

"There's no candidate in this race that can go on the highways and byways of this state and try and encourage new voters like I can," Sharpton said later in an interview. "The more people involved in the process, the better it is for the country."

1. Al's a powerful speaker

Al knows how to drive a point home. I'm not a big fan of Sharpton, but I just wish some of the other Democratic candidates had his speaking ability.

2. This is important
While I don't believe he has a chance, his candidacy does serve a very important purpose. His GOTV efforts could be invaluable, especially if he puts his support behind the eventual candidate.

8. I sent money to Sharpton for the reasons stated above...
He can inspire people to take action whether you like him or not. I wasn't a big Sharpton fan for years but I have to give him credit for his gift of gab. If it can get more voters for Democrats....Yippee!!!

9. If the party and the people here at DU will show some respect
for this man, he can make the difference for this coming election. We know he is not going to be the nominee. Send him some bucks so he can keep doing what he'd doing.

10. The Bottom Line
Higher voter turnout would solve nearly all of our problems. Getting the vote out needs to be priority one.
