'Illegal Immigration Shutting Down LA Public Hospitals' - Fox News
The benefits in immigrating to California (search) have been known to Mexican nationals for at least a decade, but California's taxpayers are only now realizing the true cost. By some estimates, one-third of all illegal immigrants to the U.S. reside in California.

Proposition 187 (search), a ballot measure passed by voters in 1994, denied public benefits to illegal aliens. The day after voters passed it, groups such as the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (search) sued and sought a permanent injunction against Proposition 187 becoming law. An injunction remains in effect, and though Davis said during his campaign that he would appeal, he steadfastly refused to do so once he was elected. There is now a pending measure that would make obtaining a California driver's license much easier for illegal immigrants. Prior to his election being recalled, Davis had said that if the measure made it to his desk, he would sign it.

4. Will the right wing blame all of California's problems on "Mexicans"?
With Arnold saying he supports 187 and this article, it makes you wonder what's going on.

Is there going to be an offensive aimed at scapegoating "Mexicans" in California by the GOP?

It seems racist and even stupid because there are so many Hispanic voters, but I wouldn't put anything past the right wingers.

5. Use caution in making assumptions about Hispanic voters
Most Hispanic voters in California were born here and are natural US citizens.

Many Hispanic immigrants went through the lawful immigration process.

Some Hispanic voters supported Proposition 187.

Not all Hispanic voters are automatically against someone who supported 187.

6. 'Some,' 'Not all.'
I have several of hispanic friends in California, and all of them were against 187, many of them bitterly so. Just because 'some' supported it, doesn't mean it was popular with the majority of hispanics, which it was not.

Support for this issue is a double-edged sword, though. I imagine many people can be easily stampeded into supporting it by blaming them durn ferners for California's current budget woes, as in fact, this Fox piece seems to do. That would create a constituency looking for someone willing to push this that could outnumber the alienated hispanics.

7. Oldest trick in the book
When you can't defend your policies and their consequences, or are too stupid to understand the question, blame somebody else, it works every time.
