Am. Bar Assoc. Loosens Attorney-Client Secrecy Rules
Edited on Mon Aug-11-03 09:57 PM by Nambe
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters)

The American Bar Association on Monday narrowly passed a controversial proposal that will allow lawyers to pierce sacred attorney-client secrecy rules to help stop financial crimes.

In a 218 to 201 vote, the ABA's policy-making body amended its ethics code to allow, but not require, lawyers to breach attorney- client privilege if they believe doing so would stop a client from committing a financial crime or fraud.

Dennis Archer, the ABA's incoming president, urged passage of the amendment.

"This is in the best interest of our profession. It is in the best interest of our country," said Archer, a former mayor of Detroit. --

1. ROFL. The worst financial abusers ARE lawyers. ho ho ho - but it
means if you are making unreported income..and you tell
your lawyer about it - he can now report you...where before
attorney/client privilege protected you.

Next, defense attorneys will be telling Ashcroft you actually
did committ that crime. Miranda? What miranda? 5th Amendment?
what 5th Amendment.

America..? oh yeah, that was a mythical country that once existed
in someone's imagination.
