Brit. citizen arrested at Newark airport for trying to smuggle missile

into U.S. Surface to air missile plot.

ABC News.

• BREAKING NEWS: Missile Smuggling Plot Broken, Brit Arrested

Never mind. No link. No missile. Just a plot.

Look at this nonsense. Apparently the "alert" above is just a follow up on this:

http://www.travelbiz.com.au/articles/99/0c018f99.asp

Howard’s comments come amid increasing concern in the US and Britain about possible ground-to-air missile attacks on commercial airliners, with authorities in London currently on full alert for fear of al Qaeda suicide attacks.

I'm sorry I interrupted what I was doing to post this.

Just: "• BREAKING NEWS: Missile Smuggling Plot Broken, Brit Arrested"

My note:
Russian made surface to air missile. This is the result of an international sting operation. His "purpose" for smuggling in missile is unknown. No word on intended target(s).

In other words, no real info., and no physical missile.

9. It was a sting operation?!?
Which means that this guy is probably some lunkhead they found on the street, and offered a bunch of money if he smuggled the 'missile'.

Zero intelligence value.
High propaganda value.

Do they really think al Queda needs to hire 'mules' to smuggle surface to air missiles into the US? Did they move everyone from the DEA into anti-terrorism now?

Sheesh...

10. He didn't smuggle a missile; he smuggled a plot.
Edited on Tue Aug-12-03 03:36 PM by NYC
They called it an "international sting operation".

Here they go again on the radio:

Terror plot uncovered. British national was trying to smuggle SAM into the country. No official comment from the FBI. Saudi Arabian authorities say they broke up a plot by Al Q officials to fire a shoulder launched missile at a British Air jet.

FBI, Secret Service, and British intelligence involved in this.

ABC finally has more meat on the bones of this info:

The man was arrested in Newark, N.J., this morning as part of an international sting pulled off by the FBI, British and Russian authorities. Other arrests are under way.

The person arrested allegedly sought to smuggle a Russian-made surface-to-air missile into the country and believed he was selling missiles to would-be terrorists, sources said. The name of the person has not been disclosed.

Shoulder launched SAMs involved in this arms deal. No word on who or what intended target may have been.

More arrests are expected in the New York area.

15. The only defense ...
Edited on Tue Aug-12-03 04:13 PM by Newsjock
... against surface-to-air missiles is running one's country in such a way that other countries and groups don't feel the need to take out your civilian aircraft with surface-to-air missiles.

We can take off our shoes and rip apart our PDAs all we want, but the reality is that "security" is a sham.

On edit: Now CNN is saying that civilian aircraft are essentially defenseless. Same point, but it's being done in a way to do nothing more than scare the living crap out of the American people. I swear, every time I make the mistake of turning on CNN, I'm gonna throw a brick through my TV.

17. What a novel concept:
"The only defense against surface-to-air missiles is running one's country in such a way that other countries and groups don't feel the need to take out your civilian aircraft with surface-to-air missiles."

You know it is one our government is not considering.

19. More info here
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3146025.stm

The BBC is really working it hard (obviously desperately eager to placate the government). They are selling it as a triumph for the security services who have prevented an attack on Airforce One.

Tom Mangold is the main reporter, a man who can always be counted on to produce stories which please the establishment. Late in 2001, he did a Panorama in which he "proved" that Iraq was in on 9/11 (based on a dramatic reconstruction of the non-existant meeting between Atta and an Iraqi agent in Prague) and that Iraq was also behind the anthrax attacks (despite the fact that by then it was already known to be caused by an American-produced strain).

MISSILE MISSILE MISSILE MISSILE plot

Then, a few minutes ago, I heard on the radio that is was a "possible plot". It's going downhill.

26. I just heard on ABC news...
That the British arms dealer in question was buying the missile at the behest of some undercover (FBI?) officers in the US.

In other words, this whole thing is contrived, except for the fact that they busted someone who was willing to go to Russia to buy a missile for someone else (for money).

Al Queda would probably handle obtaining and importing SAMs 'in house'. It seems unlikely they'd go to a random arms dealer.

28. Sense doesn't matter.
The story is even more flamboyant in the U.K. Now the intended target (how many times did I hear that the intended target had NOT been identified) is/was Air Force One.

Quite a development in a story that went from MISSILE MISSILE MISSILE MISSILE plot to POSSIBLE plot.

Now, it's a "possible" assassination attempt. Even worse that they hired the guy to go buy the missile. I'm tired of the nonsense they make up.

27. A distraction a day
keeps the media away.

How convienent. Just when the shit is hitting the fan for Tony with the Hutton investigation, MAJOR BREAKING NEWS, comes along and saves the day. Then has the story desolves into a bunch of bullshit, the masses forget what it was they were all upset about to begin with.

So many scandals, so little time.
