Sources: Enron's Lay May Soon Be Indicted
HOUSTON - Kenneth Lay, Enron Corp.'s founder and former chairman, could be indicted on charges stemming from its 2001 collapse by the end of June, sources close to the case told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Two sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said federal prosecutors are aggressively pursuing Lay, and witnesses with information about him have recently testified before a special grand jury probing Enron's December 2001 collapse.

Barring any delays, federal prosecutors aim to ask the grand jury for an indictment before the Fourth of July, the sources said. The Houston Chronicle first reported the possible indictment in Saturday's editions, citing unidentified lawyers close to the case.

It was unclear what kinds of charges would be filed against Lay, a friend and contributor to President Bush. The sources said any indictment would include conspiracy charges for allegedly participating in hiding Enron's true financial condition before the energy trader collapsed into bankruptcy. . . . .

4. When I first heard about this (VERY brief mention on a "crawl"
that runs continuously across the bottom of the screen - either on CNN or MSNBC or some such thing), the first thing I thought of was that hint in Talking Points Memo. Don't know if this has anything to do with it, but remember how Josh Marshall did say he and some colleagues were working on a story that - if it came to pass - would "shift the tectonic plates" in Washington? Maybe this ISN'T it, but it sure would make some sphincter muscles pucker inside the Beltway.

will only serve time in club Fed., and not enough time for the crime of ruining so many peoples lives. He should do hard time as an example to other fuckers, like him, that destroying peoples lives is not acceptable.

8. Oh, let it be so...
Yeah, he may spend time in "Club Fed", but while mere mortals like us would think Club Fed was a wonderful vacation, rich fuckers like Lay and Martha and Skilling are gonna react the same way we would if they dropped us in the middle of the weight room at San Quentin...

9. "hiding Enron's true financial condition"
We should take very careful note that this charge is completely unrelated to the fraud perpetrated on California.

This charge, in effect, only addresses Enron/Lay's failure to profit adequately from that fraud. This charge is SEC-related, only having to do with hiding the poor financial performance of Enron - a finacial 'performance' apparently due to not keeping the BILLIONS in proceeds on Enron's own books.

There's nothing yet to indicate that the obscene and criminal manipulation of the energy market itself and the violation of public trust will be addressed.

There's also nothing yet to indicate any prosecution for the laundering and hiding of the BILLIONS in profits, obviously shifted to off-shore corporate entities for the purpose of evading both taxes and accountability.

In other words, the 'message' is that it's OK to rape the public and it's OK to launder the money as long as the resulting financial condition of the criminal corporation isn't hidden from stockholders.
