Wise says he will not seek re-election in 2004 (WV Governor)
http://www.dailymail.com/news/News/2003081250/

Gov. Bob Wise announced today that he will not seek a second term, ending weeks of speculation about the embattled Democrat's political future.

Wise is the first governor not to seek re-election since the state Constitution was changed in 1970 to allow a sitting governor to serve a second consecutive term.

Wise dropped out of the race three months after acknowledging he was unfaithful to his wife of 19 years. The 55-year-old Democrat was linked to Angela Mascia, who oversees European projects for the West Virginia Development Office.

1. I live very close to West Virginia.
I think Wise has been a great governor, marrital problems notwithstanding. Even the Republicans they interviewed (State Legislatures from Ohio County, I believe) said good things about him and how he would go down in history as a very good governor.

I was sad when I heard this on the news this evening.

2. I've always liked Wise
I thought he was a good representative and considering the kinds of people WV has previously had as governor, I can't imagine he's all that terrible. I graduated from high school in WV and regularly visit my little sister there. When it comes to their governors, WV has always reminded me a bit of Arizona. Both seem reasonably comfortable even when their governor is under indictment.

5. Capito's turned down the race
It would probably be too difficult to beat Joe Machin and her district could easily swing to the Democrats.

7. A Democrat would win her seat, you're right...
That's why she should run... and lose.

8. West Virginia
Capito is a lot more liberal than Manchin. Bob Wise screwed the unions, passed restrictive tort reform, and allowed informed consent to become law. The bulk of his money came from coal operators. Manchin is right up there with John Ashcroft. Is the idea just to elect a Democrat regardless of their stance on issues?

12. Not popular
Capito is pro choice, Wise is not.

He had billboards removed advertising emergency contraception. Karen Cross of West Virginians for Life is currently working with the administration developing the state website on abortion. Cross is not a doctor. She had two abortions and then said she didn't realize what she was doing.

The Democratic Leadership in WV did nothing to encourage Wise to run for re election. They are supporting Lloyd Jackson. Liberals are hoping Jim Lees will run again.

Wise and Manchin are both Dems, but they are definitely not liberal.
