Five reported dead in fighting in Saudi capital
This kind of thing was unheard of a few years ago. This just did not happen in the Saudi capital. Something is going on here.

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L12206724.htm

RIYADH, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Saudi security sources said four policemen and a Muslim militant were killed in fighting in Riyadh on Tuesday, the second major clash between police and fundamentalists in the capital in three days

An Interior Ministry statement, apparently referring to the initial stages of the fighting in a known fundamentalist area in southern Riyadh, said three policemen were killed and a suspect was wounded.

It said the fighting started when police tried to check a truck parked in a street in the area. Two other policemen were wounded and an unidentified number of suspects were arrested, the statement said.

Saudi Arabia has launched a series of raids in recent months on militants suspected of links to Saudi-born Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network since suicide bombings killed 35 people -- including nine Americans -- in Riyadh in May.

1. Another coup staged by Bu$hCo?
Saudi is certainly on their short list for governments that they want to destabilize.

7. Democratization of the whole region
Certainly, that are the first signs of the beginning democratization of the whole region that was such an important justification for the liberation of the Iraqi people and oil wells.

2. Everything the BFEE touches turns to poop
I look for Saudi Arabia to explode in the next several months to a year. The Saudi people aren't fooled by the oiled elite's coziness with the BFEE -- they are going to have little patience with their leaders being in bed with a corporatocracy trying to paint Islam as "an axis of evil".

3. Fundamentalists are killing police?
This sounds quite drastic. I wonder what the outcome will be.

4. uuummmm
did you leave your sarcasm key on?

Isn't this one of the pitfalls of an invasion of Iraq? That it would give Islamic fundamentalists a reason to rise up against otherwise stable governments? (corrupt for sure, but relatively stable)

Car bombs against Jordanian interests. Hezzbollah back on the attack, maybe sponsored by Syria. Syria pissed because we violated their borders. Kurdish uprising in Turkey and agitation of Shi'ites by Iran. Whew! tough crowd over there........

6. No, I left my "naive" key on.
This does sound drastic. I guess part of what surprises me is that they were actually able to kill police. I thought the Saudi government were a step ahead in outnumbering and outgunning the general population.

5. the revolution has begun
and every government that has been too friendly with the US is in for trouble I suspect.

I think there have been several "final straws" so to speak and Iraq is one of them.

This is going to get uglier and more widespread in short order.

9. One more thing to thank gw* for
This region already wobbling out of whatever balance there was has been pushed over. The strongest glue militant islamism and a deep hatred of america is going to rise to the top. Theocracies will be the result of this the world is starting to slip down, and all the born agains are urging it on. We are going to reap the whirlwind.
