(Mass) Senate approves bill creating special election to fill Kerry's seat

If John Kerry is elected president, his seat in the U.S. Senate would be filled by the winner of a special election rather than a successor hand-picked by Republican Gov. Mitt Romney, under a bill approved Wednesday by the Massachusetts Senate.

The Senate voted along party lines, 32-8, after a sometimes testy debate pitting the badly outnumbered Republicans, who opposed the change, against Democrats.

Both sides accused the other of purely political motives.

-snip-

''Let the people vote. We heard that over and over and over and still over again recently from the executive branch during the gay marriage debate,'' said Sen. Brian Joyce, D-Milton. ''What could be more democratic than let the people vote?''

Hahahahaha, screw you Mitt Romney! :D

3. It's especially funny because the GOP
in order to enter the debate and steal a senate seat, must admit the possibility of Kerry beating Bush. That's De-Lovely, as it were.

5. I had been wondering how they'd fill Kerry's seat. Now I'm relieved.
But, who will his likely successor be?

15. Also, i forgot this
When Kerry wins in Nov and the re-election campaign kicks of for 2008, Mitt Romney will be running for the gop nomination unless he implodes, which would be entertaining to watch. I know that last part is petty but i can't stand that guy ever since he ran against Kennedy.

16. same here!
I was living in Vermont at the time Mitt ran against Kennedy, but our NBC affiliate was out of Boston (ch. 7) so I saw all of the anti-Kennedy ads. It made my blood boil! :grr:

17. Probably Markey, Frank or Meehan
Barney Frank has said he wants to be a senator but would stay in the House if democrats take control which would make him the Financial Services Committee Chairman. But, that is unlikely. Ed Markey has also expressed interest and Meehan has been positioning for a statewide run for a while. Also, Joe Kennedy II has been mentioned as a possible candidate. Pretty much any of the other congressmen excluding Olver could run but I doubt that any of them could win the democratic nomination over Markey, Frank, Meehan and Kennedy.

7. What's the House vote look like?
Can they sustain the bill against a veto?

Come to think of it.... what does MA require to override a veto?

It must be approved as soon as possible! We mustn't allow Romney to appoint a fellow rightist to the position.

The GOP thought it was so smart in pushing Kerry into a forced resignation of his seat.
