Governor says he'll call as many special sessions as it takes
AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry said today he will continue to call special legislative sessions on congressional redistricting until the issue is resolved and said he believes a new redistricting map will be approved this year, the Austin American-Statesman reported on its Web site today.

"If there is work to be done, I expect the Legislature to be here conducting it," Perry told the newspaper. "There is work to be done."

When asked by the Statesman if that means continuous special sessions, Perry said: "You can surmise that."

The Texas Constitution allows a governor to call a 30-day special session on any topic at any time. Perry has already called two special sessions since the regular legislative session ended in June. Lawmakers are in the middle of the second session now but work in the Senate chamber has been stalled because 11 Democrats fled the Capitol, breaking a Senate quorum, in protest of plans to take up congressional redistricting.

1. Vanity governing
"MINE! MINE! MINE!" screams Perry, like a tantrum-throwing toddler.

It has nothing to do with legitimate redistricting. Oh, I hope there's a backlash.

18. Not going to happen with those four
Guinn is known as "the Anointed One", and Perdue was elected by Diebold.

I recommend instead recalling Pawlenty and Murkowski...I'm tempted to go for Martz, but she's too easy to beat in 2004.

21. Interesting Map
Recall initiatives seem to be much more popular in the western states. I wonder why that is?

22. It has to do with when and how they became states
I remember learning about this in high school -- I'm a bit fuzzy on the details now, but basically the states that were admitted to the Union in the late 1800's had a far more populist slant than those back east. For example, some of the Western states had women's suffrage even before the Constitution was amended to make it universal. It was partly because of their Wild West heritage, partly because populism was part of the mood of the time, partly because they had more reason to be resentful of the railroads and other corporate interests.

Recall and initiatives were the two most common aspects of this sort of populism. (Others, like unicameral legislatures, were far less widespread.) It seems like a terrible irony that institutions which were originally intended to make state governments more democratic and responsive to the will of the people have proven instead to be ideal tools for small, well-financed, and unscrupulous minorities.

4. What an arrogant, stupid SOB!
When did you abdicate your office to Tom DeLay, jerk? Who's the Governor, you or him?? Think for yourself and listen to the people you govern. We don't want this crap shoved down our throats, and we'll make those responsible pay the next time we go to the polls.

6. Wow, most other states are really hurtin' for money right now
Texas must be as flush as a sailor on shore leave (that's a military reference there, Mr. Rove -- look it up) to be able to afford all these costly, pointless special sessions designed to enact extra-legal legislation.

...for a special session. Crikies, it's an emergency, the economy (jobless recovery) is doing crap, soldiers are dying, Iraq and Afghanistan are a mess. Where's the special session for that stuff? Stupid republican anti-American corporatists...

12. Governor Perry
and I really hate to call him governor, does not care about the people of Texas, because if he listened to the majority of the mainstream Texans, he would be reluctant to call for any more "special sessions" to promote this idiotic redistricting plan. Most of the folks I have had converse with think this redistricting ploy by Republicans is, to put it simply, "brain dead" reasoning.
But then Perry does not care about the common folks, only the rich corporate jerks and morons like DeLay.

Oh wait, that's not gonna happen. Nor are the Pukes going to break from the BugMan's lockstep.

The Pukes will be relentless about this. Relentless. History has shown us this. Might as well get used to it.

15. nice dodge
"If there is work to be done, I expect the Legislature to be here conducting it," Perry told the newspaper. "There is work to be done."

the special sessions are not about "work" relating to the people's business, they're about a sleazy partisan power grab.

16. Texas to Governor Goodhair:
YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!!!!!!!

People do not want this - they turned out by the thousands in the hearings to oppose it; they showed up by the thousands in Austin last weekend to protest it. There were no appreciable counterprotests or any support at any of the hearings around the state.

YOU'RE ALSO A STUPID BASTARD!

Let's just say that the redistricting gets done and a whole lot of incumbent Dem House members go home. Now you have a bunch of freshmen, who even if Pugs, have NO clout on their committees. Senior Minority party members help get legislation passed for the good of Texas. All this clout will pass mostly to the next senior groups in Illinois and California.

SO KEEP TRYING TO EVISCERATE TEXAS' POLITICAL INFLUENCE, YOU BUGBUTT SNIFFING POLTROON!!!!!!!

Gee, I got to use the word "poltroon!"

17. Time to set up permanent camp in NM...
They cannot return, plain and simple. No session, no remap, no way. The longer they hold out, the better for building the Democratic Party in Texas.

but re-redistricting New Mexico and Oklahoma is starting to look pretty good.

As for Texas, I expect the Killer D's to hang out in New Mexico for as long as it takes.

24. Texas Democrats should stick with it.
(snip) Montgomery said he believes the fight may hurt Perry and Dewhurst in the long run, partly because Republican support for redistricting is not as strong as Democratic opposition to it.

His July poll found that 48 percent of the self-identified Republicans favored doing congressional redistricting now. About 25 percent oppose redistricting, with the rest undecided. That compares with 71 percent Democratic opposition.

"There is absolutely no reason for the Democrats to give in," Montgomery said. (snip/...)
