CIA tipped off on 9/11 pilot

News 24 -13/08/2003

Hamburg - The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had one of the September 11, 2001 terror pilots under surveillance as early as March 1999 after a tip from German security services, according to joint investigative reports in Germany.

The weekly magazine Stern and the first German public television channel ARD, in reports to be published and aired on Thursday, focus on Marwan Alshehhi, who piloted the Boeing plane which crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Centre.

How Alshehhi then managed to slip from the view of the CIA is the focus of the reports by ARD and Stern, details of which were provided to Deutsche Presse-Agentur in advance on Wednesday.

1. It is hard to imagine how these people can go on claiming ignorance
I still haven't seen anybody explain what went on with the (alleged) plane that hit the Pentagon. But if they can bury that along with the story of Al Gore giving a speech, it will just take a little more digging Thanks for the info

4. Andreas von Buelow,
former German Minister of Defence to Helmut Schmidt, said some interesting things about 9/11 in an interview with the German daily Tagesspiegel on Jan 13, 2002:

"What about the obscure stock transactions? In the week prior to the attacks, the amount of transactions in stocks in American Airlines, United Airlines, and the insurance companies, increased 1,200%. It was for a value of $15 billion. Some people must have known something. Who?"

"What has gone on, and goes on, in the name of intelligence services, are true crimes."

the attacks "fit perfectly in the concept of the armaments industry, the intelligence agencies, the whole military-industrial-academic complex. This is in fact conspicuous. The huge raw materials reserves of the former Soviet Union are now at their disposal, also the pipeline routes..."

The hijackers left tracks "like a herd of stampeding elephants. They made payments with credit cards with their own names; they reported to their flight instructors with their own names. They left behind rented cars with flight manuals for jumbo jets. They took with them, on their suicide trip, wills and farewell letters, which fall into the hands of the FBI, because they were stored in the wrong place and wrongly addressed. Clues were left behind like in a child's game of hide-and-seek, which were to be followed!"

"With the help of the horrifying attacks, the Western mass democracies were subjected to brainwashing. The enemy image of anti-communism doesn't work anymore; it is to be replaced by peoples of Islamic belief."

"When in doubt, it is always worthwhile to take a look at a map, where are raw materials resources, and the routes to them? Then lay a map of civil wars and conflicts on top of that - they coincide. The same is the case with the third map: nodal points of the drug trade. Where all this comes together, the American intelligence services are not far away. By the way, the Bush family is linked to oil, gas and weapons trade, through the Bin Laden family."

"I know a lot of people, including very influential ones, who agree with me, but only in whispers, never publicly."

He is considered a nutjob though - not a reliable source.

On Edit:
He was never minister of defense; he was minister of research and education. He was a deputy minister of defense however.

Note that the CIA was also keeping an eye on Marwan's pal Mohammed Atta in Germany as well. Here's my timeline entry about it:

January-May 2000: 9/11 hijacker Atta is put under surveillance by the CIA while living in Germany. (AFP, 9/22/01, Focus, 9/24/01, Berliner Zeitung, 9/24/01) He is "reportedly observed buying large quantities of chemicals in Frankfurt, apparently for the production of explosives <and/or> for biological warfare. The US agents reported to have trailed Atta are said to have failed to inform the German authorities about their investigation," even as the Germans are investigating many of his associates. "The disclosure that Atta was being trailed by police long before 11 September raises the question why the attacks could not have been prevented with the man's arrest." (Observer, 9/30/01) A German newspaper adds that Atta was still able to get a visa into the US on May 18. The surveillance stopped when he left for the US at the start of June. But "experts believe that the suspect remained under surveillance in the United States." (Berliner Zeitung, 9/24/01) A German intelligence official also states, "We can no longer exclude the possibility that the Americans wanted to keep an eye on Atta after his entry in the USA." (Focus, 9/24/01) This correlates with a Newsweek claim that US officials knew Atta was a "known <associate> of Islamic terrorists well before <9/11>." (Newsweek, 9/20/01) However, a Congressional inquiry later reports that the US "intelligence community possessed no intelligence or law enforcement information linking 16 of the 19 hijackers <including Atta> to terrorism or terrorist groups." (Senate Intelligence Committee, 9/20/02)

---

Is it believable that they watched them in Germany, knew they were coming to the US, then lost all interest in them as soon as they boarded a plane for the US? No way. Note also how all records of the CIA tracking these two in Germany have been completely expunged from the hundreds of thousands of documents the CIA gave the Congressional 9/11 Inquiry. I'll bet if it weren't for German records we would never know these stories.

Note also how the US media has completely ignored or forgotten such stories. This kind of thing has only been reported overseas, except for one sentence in Newsweek shortly after 9/11.

Finally, is Andreas von Bülow just considered a nutjob (because of his new, radical 9/11 theories), or is he really a nutjob? My understanding is that he was a member of the German parliament for 20 plus years, and was in some version of an intelligence oversight committee for much of that time, then he was also a cabinet member for a while. That doesn't sound like a nutjob to me.

9. IMHO he is a nutjob
He may have some points, but he went Don Quichotte against the CIA long before 9/11. In his Interviews he is often introduced as "former minister of defense", however: he never was minister of defense. (although this might be due to a mistranslation: Ger "Staatssekretär" = ENG: "deputy minister"). He was a cabinet member in the early 80s and a house member (MdB) till 94. In the house he was in the commitee overseeing the agencies.

He uses words like "possibly" very often in his reasoning and tends to go anti-Israel for absurd incidents; that alone makes him a nutjob in my eyes.

Anyway: in his books he mixes reliable with unreliable Information, making them worthless for any good analysis.

8. More info
Here's a couple of other relevant timeline entries:

February 17, 1999: German intelligence is periodically tapping suspected al-Qaeda terrorist Mohammed Haydar Zammar's telephone, and on this day investigators hear a caller being told Zammar is at a meeting with "Mohamed, Ramzi and Said," and could be reached at the phone number of the Marienstrasse apartment where all three of them live. This refers to Mohamed Atta, Ramzi bin al-Shibh and Said Bahaji. But apparently the German police fail to grasp its importance of these names, even though Said Bahaji is also under investigation.(AP, 6/22/02, New York Times, 1/18/03) Atta's last name is given as well. Agents check the phone number and confirm the street address, but it isn't known what they make of the information. (Der Spiegel, 2/3/03)

September 21, 1999: German intelligence is periodically tapping suspected al-Qaeda terrorist Mohammed Haydar Zammar's telephone, and on this day investigators hear Zammar call hijacker Marwan Alshehhi. Officials initially claim that the call also mentions hijacker Mohamed Atta, but only his first name. (Telegraph, 11/24/01, New York Times, 1/18/03) But in fact, his full name, "Mohammed Atta Al Amir," is mentioned in this call and in another recorded call. (FAZ, 2/2/03) Alshehhi, living in the United Arab Emirates at the time, calls Zammar frequently. German intelligence asks the United Arab Emirates to identify the number and the caller, but the request is not answered. (Der Spiegel, 2/3/03)

---

Keep in mind that the German gvmt initially denied they'd had any knowledge of any of the hijackers or their associates before 9/11. But as time goes on, more and more leaks out.
