Bush Asserts Sluggish Economy Is on Road to Recovery
So, the economy either turns around in spite of the previous 2 take-aways, or it doesn't and bush and his cronies loot the treasury again.
Ah, it's GOOD TO BE KING!

article

By ELISABETH BUMILLER
NY Times

RAWFORD, Tex., Aug. 13 — President Bush asserted today that the sluggish American economy was on the road to recovery, and he said there was no need to push for a new round of tax cuts as he heads into his re-election campaign this fall.

"We are discussing a lot of things, and we believe that the tax relief plan we have in place is robust enough to encourage job growth," Mr. Bush told reporters at his 1,600-acre Texas ranch as he stood flanked by his top economic advisers.

He added, "If we change our opinion, we will let you know."

41. Game - 2nd qtr was puffed up - and will be revised still higher to 3%
GNP growth so that Bush gets good PR for the fall

idea is to keep those poll numbers up in the hopes that they will be sticky in 2004 as the Dem's bash each other.

In Jan we will make revisions downward to 3rd and announce a low 4th qtr, them have growing numbers going into the election.

There was a time when the gov put out honest numbers -

sigh

:-(

6. The Road to Recovery? WTF? Is this a Bob Hope remake
Mr. Bush, we want jobs, we want them now, and we want you to do something constructive, visionary, sustainable, and economically prudent to make it happen. That's what leadership is about, Mr. Bush. Not slogans and sound bites, but actual far-sighted and positive policies and programs.

We have had enuf of your stinkin oil war. Bring 'em home.

12. Minnesota DFL and Mark Dayton have a nice answer for this
clap trap.

See my post:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=171072&mesg_id=171072

Saw Mark Dayton (DFL MN) at the Rochester MN airport this morning. He and Matt Entenza (Minority House leader, MN) were traveling rural Minnesota today to discuss the failed policies of the * and Pawlenty (Gov – MN) administrations.

snip

My favorite quote of the morning was in reference to *’s traveling circus of an economic team that came into Minnesota last week and told us how MN was on the forefront of the economic recovery. Dayton called it “operating in Evidence Free Economic Zones”. Dayton cited the highest unemployment rates in 10 years (noting who the Pres was that brought about that!), no new hiring, the failure of NAFTA, and migration of jobs.

Choice comments on finding new jobs in Minnesota was as easy as finding WMD in Iraq – you just make them up!

What's really really really sad is that this fuck isn't meeting with his "economic advisors" down on the pig ranch to discuss ways to improve the economy. The only thing being discussed in Wacko Texas is "how can we spin all this bad news to make it seem like things are getting better?"

17. Hoover, 1932 election
The Republican Party put billboards up across the country saying, "Wasn't that Depression awful?"

The voters weren't fooled. But then, the press wasn't marching in lockstep to support and deify Hoover and absolve him of all blame.

20. This is like a broken record.
“Recovery is on the way. Recovery is on the way. Recovery is on the way.”

Remember how recovery was on the way last year at this time? It was supposed to happen after the first of the year. In the spring it’s always “Recovery is coming this summer”. In the fall it’s always “Recovery is coming in the first quarter of next year”. It’s the same thing we always heard from George the 1st too. Recovery is always 4 to 6 months out with these Cheap Labor Republicans.

How are we supposed to have an economic recovery in this country when gas prices are rising?

Recovery is nowhere in sight. It isn’t even on the agenda. They want to keep an unemployment rate of 7% so that people can’t go out and find an employer who is willing to offer better pay or benefits. They want us all hungry and desperate so we’ll take any job we can get. Meanwhile they keep recycling the same economic forecast over and over.

22. I hate to say it, but Bush is right
I'm pretty confident that the economy will get stronger in the weeks and months to come. HOWEVER, I would say that when the economy gets stronger, many people will be left out of it. The rich are certainly getting much richer, despite unemployment figures going through the roof.

I believe that the only reason why he won't give us more tax cuts is because we're already seriously in the hole, and he doesn't need to make that budget deficit look worse than it is.

It may be a stronger economy, but most people are worse off than they were under Clinton. Hopefully that will cause a regime change.

25. what good is a strong economy
if only the rich benefit.
it seems to me such an economy is not a usefull measure of success of a nation.

It is not the positive thing Bush tries to make it look like.
He'd probably argue "trickle down", but that'd take to long, if it works at all. People need food, healthcare etc now, not n years down the road.

38. Really, Bunnypants?
>He added, "If we change our opinion, we will let you know."<

Let me tell you about the past 24 hours in our circle of friends.

My friend was laid off. They're outsourcing her tech writing job to INDIA. It's kind of important to have native speakers as tech writers while doing software documentation and disaster recovery plans, but hell, what do I know?

Another friend's husband lost his contract gig yesterday. It was originally supposed to go for another six months. They're not replacing him, or the others that got laid off yesterday.

I received a mail from a third friend last night. Her son, a top 5% student at the London School of Economics (!), amazingly brilliant, hard worker, cannot find an internship. Anywhere.

Of course, there's our next door neighbor. He has 25 years' experience in IT. He lost his job in December. He's been through scores of interviews. No job in sight.

Sure there's an economic recovery. * will have lots of time to think about it when he's also unemployed, won't he?

Julie
