Australia stepped up its growing involvement in the security of its neighbours yesterday by announcing the creation of a new pan-Pacific police college.
At the annual Pacific Islands Forum in Auckland, John Howard, the Australian prime minister, said the college, to be set up in Fiji, would produce 200 officers a year to police the small island states of the region. He has described some of them as "unviable".
The initiative reflects Canberra's growing willingness to flex its muscles in the region amid increasing concerns that without proper policing, its South Pacific backyard could become lawless
