News said a large mortgage company went belly-up today. Told employees to take their stuff and leave. 1500 home loans in WA alone are endangered. Billions of dollars at stake! Is this the tip of the iceberg?

Last night I learned, when Torontonians were told to conserve water, that the city has only 24-hours worth of water in its reservoir. When the pumps are knocked out, the supply can't be replenished, and the level drops fast. By this morning we were down to 40%. Apparently a 24-hour supply is common for most cities.

What would happen if the water ran out? Well, we were told, there are contingency plans... truck in water, have distribution points...

Good Lord.

I've been reading much recently about peak oil. One thing that's stuck with me is how, without abundant, cheap energy, urban life as we know it will be untenable.

Like the title of Richard Heinberg's book says, The Party's Over.

If we don't stop being so gluttonous, the rest of the world is going to have to try and stop us somehow I would think. We cannot continue with this consumerist mentality, there simply isn't enough resources for the whole world to live that way.
