High radiation readings cause concern

BILLINGS (AP) - The Custer National Forest in southeastern Montana has closed one area to the public after finding high levels of radioactivity at abandoned uranium mines in the Pryor Mountains.

The Bureau of Land Management, alerted by the forest, is considering closing some nearby sites.

"What we're showing is radiation background levels that far exceed natural levels," said Pat Pierson of the Beartooth Ranger District.

Exposure to excessive radiation has been linked to cancer and birth defects.

"We're being very conservative to ensure we don't jeopardize people's health and safety," he said.

systems...there are lots of Uranium mines in Colorado and New Mexico...it's the gift that keeps on giving...cancers, birth defects, hormonal disruptions, acute and chronic disorders...and the Uranium tailings were used for all kinds of construction projects: schools, houses, highways...so expect to find more all over...

the Uranium emits Radon gases, which permeate through into the buildings from the foundations....and Uranium itself emits alpha, beta and gamma rays, all of which disrupt the chemical reactions of the human body...not to mention that plants don't grow on the tailings pilings...

and what exactly was the pentagoon doing up there in Missoula...they likely left all kind of other nuclear damage in their wake...the leaching from Uranium mines and tailings pilings can migrate through ground water, surface water and soils....

this is the cost of America's Nuclear Weapons madness...a cost that never gets accounted for as bush* and his minions march to war (three wars NOW...Afganistan lost, Iraq loosing, and Liberia just begun...when will Americans demand that bush* stop)....by our uncontrolled hate (making nuclear holocausts), we have POISONED OURSELVES....)p.s. likely the government will simply pour concrete down into the mines and walk away...don't let them do that...it is not a solution...for in just a few years, the concrete will crack and Uranium/Radon will be leaching into ground water/soils and migrating....

anyhow, if you'd read the material i posted elsewhere, i explicitly mentioned that uranium miners were one group of people exposed to high-enough levels of uranium to be suffering adverse health effects.

of course, i don't really expect you to have read everything i posted (but if you haven't, how do you know the content and that i'm indeed worthy of a pre-emptive attack?)

people just didn't know any better in the 'old days'....but it always amazes me how little people want to learn about chemicals today...you'd think that with all the advances in science and institutes of higher education today, that people would take a little more interest....

"health mines?"...go in there and breathe some radon, while getting bombarded with radioactive Uranium isotopes, and usually some other ones too....sounds like a wonderful way to cure arthritis, by killing the entire body, the pain eventually goes away...

re-selected, you can count on many Uranium mining operations opening up again...many people worked very hard to shut these mines down, and force our government to clean this mess up and compensate the miners who got cancer from the radionuclides....bush* has already started up the manufacture of Plutonium again for nuke bombs (which has been shut down through much of the Clinton administration)...so the Uranium mines will be opening next...BOOT bush* in 2004..
