Foes of gay marriage renew push for a ban
'You can't rule a constitutional amendment unconstitutional'

Washington -- Religious conservatives pledge an all-out drive to enshrine a ban on same-sex marriage in the U.S. Constitution, calling it the last line of defense against an inevitable court-led destruction of a fundamental social institution.

Their Federal Marriage Amendment, after dying with no action in the last Congress, has been reintroduced, this time with 75 House co-sponsors. Senate hearings are scheduled for September, and the proposed amendment has the blessing of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.

Gay groups and opponents of the anti-gay-marriage amendment in Congress say they take it seriously and, privately, express considerable alarm.

"I think you've got this panic on both sides," said an activist who talks to religious conservatives and gay rights groups. "The groups concerned about the gay agenda need to come up with a line in the sand that works, and gay marriage might. The gay groups don't mind politicians being against gay marriage, as long as it's not written into the Constitution. They figure they can come back in 10 years when things have calmed down and revisit it."

1. If they have to explicitly ban it
doesn't that mean it's the current assumption that gay marriage is actually permitted under the US Constitution? You don't ban something that's already unlawful. Kinda like tacking on a Constitutional Amendment proscribing murder.

Doesn't make sense.

13. It isn't specifically permitted by the Constitution
unless you count that whole silly "pursuit of liberty and happiness" thing as allowing people to marry the people they love.

The Constitution is, properly, neutral on such a specific subject, and ought to stay that way.

2. "Senate hearings are scheduled for September"
It hasn't been introduced on the Senate side yet.

3. Don't most amendments do something positive?
Like grant priviledges or rights to a group of people? Will this be the first one to deny rights to a group of people? If so, I think this might wake up some sleeping Americans to the true fascist nature of the republican party.

The dividers, not the uniters.

12. Amendments to ban stuff
Good point....with the exception of Prohibition, most amendments are to clarify or codify the rights people have, not prohibit things. It does seem, though, that conservatives (ironically) seem to want to amend the Constitution to TAKE AWAY rights, not codify the ones we already have.

4. I Don't Get It... Why Do They Care?
What is it about my private life... my relationship... that interests them so much? How does my happiness interfere with theirs? Whom am I hurting?

11. They care because...
they hold onto power by catering to fear, hatred, and ignorance. Instead of souls, they have bitter, vile, shrivled up forces driving them. They fear love, laughter, happiness, and people living in harmony.

Their own lives are so barren and devoid of meaning, that they are on a relentless drive to make everybody else as miserable and filled with self-loathing as they are.

The rest of us, Allen, are happy when other people are happy, secure, and content. We want people to be free to pursue their private lives together, without prejudiced, hateful, right-wing creatures telling them they can't.

8. God you're so right!
I mean, I can't COUNT the number of my gay friends (quite a few) who, in addition to being gay, are also into beastiality, polygamy, and incest....the numbers are STARTLING!! Startling I tell you :not:

How about this---if the 'sanctity' of marriage and family and all that bullshit is *SO* important to folks like you, why not outlaw divorce, considering that over 50% of marriages end in divorce? Why not make adultery a capitol crime---punishable by DEATH?????

Haven't ya'll gotten tired of the same, hackneyed argument over and over again? Wasn't integration supposed to lead to wild black bucks raping our nubile young white Christian women? Wasn't women getting the vote supposed to lead to rampant lesbianism and such?

Lets have death penalty for any kind of flirting, touching, even thinking about the opposite sex till we marry them

How about putting on the Burka so that women cant tempt the men?

American Taliban is very much alive and kicking. And they are in the senate and the congress. And they have an ally in Dubya

9. WRONG!!!!!!!!
The overwhelming majority of people who participate in such activities as bestiality, polygamy, incest, pedophilia, etc. are HETERSEXUALS.

Please do not mention these activities in a manner indended to incite neative feelings against our gay brethern.

It is quite clear that the statement is meant to be satire. And rightly so. The way to defeat this bullshit is to ridicule it.

On edit - I thought you were responding to post # 8 - which is satire - but maybe you were responding to the deleted post. (# 6)

It was obviously someone here to cause trouble, because they used their first-ever post to engage in some good old-fashioned gay-bashing.

7. Marriage is a Religious Ceremony
As such, any law regulating marriage is inherently unconstitutional.

17. Will someone please tell me what my agenda is?
I keep hearing about this "homosexual/ gay agenda" yet I have no idea what it consists of. This homo wants to know what it's all about so I can decide whether or not to take up the cause. I mean, I've been active in the movement to bring the civil rights of homosexuals up to the level of regular United States citizens, but this agenda thing, I haven't had explained to me yet. Does anyone have the blueprints or the files? Is it like a gay PNAC or something, a queer plan for world domination? Any info would be greatly appreciated and widely disseminated, as I'm sure I'm not the only one left scratching my head when I hear about this "gay agenda".
