**Un Sanctions to be Lifted From Libya?**
Monday, August 18, 2003 Posted: 9:19 AM EDT (1319 GMT)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) -- Eyes were on France on Monday as Britain prepared to ask the Security Council to end U.N. sanctions on Libya and take the final step toward closing the book on the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.

British Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry agreed to introduce a draft resolution to end U.N. sanctions on Libya after its U.N. envoy, Ahmed Own, sent a letter to the 15-nation council on Friday renouncing terrorism and taking blame for the 270 dead from the bombing of the jumbo jet over Lockerbie, Scotland.

<snip>

...London and Washington have told the council they want the sanctions quickly lifted now that Libya has assumed responsibility for the attack...

Question: Isn't this an interesting stance for the U.S. to take on a country that is generally considered to sponsor terrorism (maybe I'm misinformed on this point)? Does this mean that all Saddam had to do was to say "Terrorists Bad!!" and then fork over a bunch of money?? Whats the real story here? What does the U.S. have to gain by lifting sanctions against Libya?

1. Libya was given a set of conditions for lifting sanctions
And they've now complied with all those conditions.
