Storm drives cargo ship ashore in Table Bay - SA

Salvage experts at the scene where a large container ship has run aground on Sunset Beach in Table Bay do not believe the ship will spill her fuel oil or leak.

The Sealand Express, which belongs to Maersk Zeeland, is in the surf about 150m off the beach and is taking a battering from heavy seas.

The ship, carrying general cargo containers and reefer containers, was pushed with her starboard side to the beach at the height of the storm that blew in over Cape Town from the north-east about 6.40am on Tuesday.

The vessel, fully laden and coming in to Cape Town to discharge cargo and take on fuel, was pushed off course by a gale and heavy seas and driven into the shallows.
