Close Call For Sen. Maria Cantwell

August 19, 2003

By KOMO Staff & News Services

SEATTLE - Senator Maria Cantwell is counting her blessing that her schedule was running a bit behind Tuesday afternoon.

The Washington senator was in the Middle East with six other lawmakers to check in on rebuilding efforts and the quality of life for U.S. troops.

Sharla Neuman, an aide of Cantwell, told KOMO 1000 News that Cantwell had just arrived in Baghdad from Jordan Tuesday afternoon and was on her way to a meeting at or near the Canal Hotel -- the scene of a car bombing that destroyed the hotel and injured dozens. But her schedule was running far behind and she was not at the building when the bomb went off. (snip/...)

So far DU'ers have named John McCain, Tom Delay, and Harold Ford (Tenn.) as part of the Congressional delegation due in Baghdad today. Maria Cantwell, now, also.

Any other names, yet?

On edit: Thanks, I just added John McCain. Also Kay Bailey Hutchinson, John Sununu, Jim Kolbe (R.,Az.)

She was 'on her way' to the area, just running late.

4. Kay Baily Hutchinson
is there. She was the first one CNN got to comment on what happened over there. Of course, she said we are still committed.

Then after she got off, the broadcaster wondered if she would call the madmonkey* and report first hand what happened over there -- (after he got back from the golf course). Yuk! I can't stand that woman.

7. Interesting.
You can always hope she was wearing one of her lovely fashionable ensembles, maybe one of the ones with enormous collars.

She was always such a fashion plate, doncha know?

I ALWAYS wondered how the hey she got into the Senate. Did a night guard let her in?

13. That's not a picture of Cantwell!
That's a photo of Kay Baily Hutchinson, the Repug from Texas!

Cantwell is a much better looker and much better dresser.

I hope she stays safe over there!

25. Yeah, that's
right: the way they look and dress is real important in politics...Sheesh, can't we focus on ISSUES and not appearance?

and spends an inordinate amount of time dragging around in vivid, meant-to-be-noticed costumes.

Maybe someone was pointing out that a person who is interested in appearance to such a degree is also not concerned with substance.

It's an either/or situation.

Maybe you didn't understand it was a comment she is superficial, and not terribly bright, a power which would be very useful in the Senate.

On edit:

You will be touched learning Kay Bailey Hutchinson is a former cheerleader, just like American idols George Bush, Trent Lott, and Ronald Reagan.

27. I understand
that raving on about a person's looks or manner of dress cheapens the political discourse and weakens one's arguements.

5. Okay, now I got it
The reason for the bombing was because the bombers knew there would be a delegation of American Congressmen at the building. No conspiracy, no brilliant Saddam plot. Just a plan to kill more Americans.

21. UTTER BULLSHIT! Just read the linked article!
http://www.komotv.com/stories/26708.htm

Cantwell, D-Wash., had been scheduled to meet Tuesday with the official, Sergio Vieira de Mello. The meeting was to have taken place a few hours before the bomb exploded at about 4:30 p.m. local time, Cantwell said.

The session was scrapped because the plane she and other lawmakers were traveling on was delayed on a flight from Jordan. The meeting was to have been at the military headquarters used by the U.S.-led forces in Iraq, about 5 miles from the U.N. site, Cantwell said.

After landing in Baghdad in mid-afternoon, Cantwell and the envoy tentatively set up a telephone call for about 6 p.m. local time. The call never took place.

At a teleconference Tuesday night from Kuwait, where she and other lawmakers were flown for their own safety, Cantwell speculated that Vieira de Mello might not have been killed if the meeting had taken place as scheduled. "It's hard to say," she said, adding that the envoy may have stayed at the military headquarters long enough to have avoided the attack.

Cantwell comes out of one of the most aggressively insidious corporations this side of a virus, RealNetworks. She is a pro-war, pro big business dem, albeit a small step to the left of ole Slade.

16. She came from Jordon so obviously it's our closest safest launching stop
from that area, (since the Congresspersons touch down there.) I really don't know what's going on in the Middle East but I would figure this is way the Jordon embassy was bombed. If you listen/read the news it seems no one can figure out why it was bombed.
