TIKRIT, Iraq (Reuters) - Guerrillas ambushed U.S. troops in Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s hometown of Tikrit in central Iraq (news - web sites) on Wednesday, killing a contractor and wounding two soldiers, a U.S. military officer said.

Major Bryan Luke did not give the nationality of the contractor. He said assault rifles were fired at a three-vehicle convoy near a market in the center of Tikrit, 110 miles north of Baghdad.

Luke had initially said rocket-propelled grenades had also been fired, but later said this was not correct.

1. We must be guarding contractors.................
Can you imagine the number of people in Iraq for whom the US is providing security? I wonder how many bodyguards each member of the Iraqi Governing Council (aka US controlled council) has?

3. Word should soon get out to the contractors
that getting transferred to Iraq to work on infrastructure is like being assigned to the Front.
Wonder what kind of hazard pay they are getting.
Wonder how their employers are dealing with their employees life insurance, since there are exclusions for war in all life insurance policies.

10. Not to be disrespectful of the dead...
... but you have to wonder why this contractor merited a military escort. Was he working to restore electicity, water, vital services et al and if so, why not just say so?

Why are these contractors who are reported killed always cloaked in such anonymity?

6. Fortunately for Smirk he is not and never has been conntected to
reality.

A big plus for ideologues. They don't have to deal with facts and issues, just justify their fantasies.

7. "contractor" means anything these days..

The guy could have been one of Bushco's private soldiers or some Wackenhut goose-stepping goon. Or it could have been some poor electrical engineer out looking at the power lines. Who knows?

With the veil of censorship and lies the misAdministration has drawn around Iraq, we'll probably never know the truth about yet another incident.

9. Bremer: "This kind of attack is the reason why US soldiers are here...
...and why they'll stay."

Do the mind-numbing lies ever stop with these people?
