Ten Commandments Ruling in Ala. Appealed
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 10:17 a.m. ET
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Chief Justice Roy Moore asked the U.S. Supreme Court to block the removal of a Ten Commandments monument from the state judicial building Wednesday as supporters held a candlelight vigil to begin a round-the-clock protest. Moore, who was turned back twice Tuesday by a federal appeals panel, filed a motion Wednesday asking the Supreme Court to stay an order for the monument's removal by the end of the day. Alabama Attorney General Bill Pryor said he expected the stone display to be out of the building ``very soon'' in compliance with court orders.

<snip>His emergency request Wednesday was filed with Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, who can handle the matter himself or refer it to the full court. Kennedy oversees cases from the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Moore's attorney, Herbert Titus, wrote that a stay would ``permit the Chief Justice to fulfill the campaign promise that he made to the citizens of Alabama to restore the moral foundation of law.''<snip>

<snip>The 11th Circuit earlier this year agreed with a ruling by U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson, who held the monument violates the constitution's ban on government promotion of religion. Thompson has said he may fine the state about $5,000 a day if the monument is not removed by the end of the day Wednesday. <snip>

2. He's not paying for any of this himself.
He is totally funded by some fundamentalist Christian organization. That's who "donated" for the monument to begin with.

3. Good. Fine THEM.
There's no reason the state of Alabama should have to pay a fine incurred by a judge who's gone off the deep end and the religious nutbags who have encouraged him to do so.

8. The fundies may pay some lawyer's fees, but WE will pay the fine!
We, as in the taxpayers of AL. The state is already facing the worst finacial crisis in its history mainly because of the ignorant bubbas that would rather see public education shut down than miss any of their beer money. $5000/day would buy a lot of PBR!

4. Ponder on this ---
How come all this stuff about posting the Ten Commandments in front of courthouses or in courtrooms?

I spend a lot of time in courthouses. I never - repeat, never - see the Bill of Rights posted in any courtrooms. And the Bill of Rights BELONGS in courtrooms.

Maybe we could make a deal with these guys to post the Bill of Rights in front of their church.

5. Never thought of that one LOL!
I watched the protest on c-span the other day and laughed my ass off when Allen Keyes got up and made a twenty minute
speech. (Right Wing Nut) My only regret was that I didn't tape it. If ya had seen it you would know what I mean! It was a classic
Allen Keyes rant.

6. move the damn thing!
with all the money spent litigating and challenging and such, why hasn't some private group -- perferably a Jewish or Christian with outdoor space near courthouse -- VOLUNTEER to move the Commandments monument to private property, such as the front lawn of their synagogue or church. Why can't reasonable people find a peaceful, common ground here? It's no more appropriate in a courthouse than a crucifix or star of David over the Judge's bench.

The monument looks hand-carved out of granite and would be a handsome addition to a religious organization's building. I am not religious at all but I respect the sensibilities and mores of people-of-faith. I wish, in turn, they would respect mine!

C'mon of ye of faith and deep pockets .... volunteer to more the monument and thus, remove the controversy.

This sounds like the description for an item offered in
a Public TV fund-raising auction.

Maybe the local PBS outlet would take it? Then the fundies
can bid on it, allowing them to come to own a genuine piece
of history while simultaneously supporting thier local Public
TV station. :-)

7. I know it
I've thought of that too and boy I think it's time for a national campaign to get the Bill of Rights in every courthouse.

9. The Bill of Rights...
The Bill of Rights (and other related quotations) is carved into
the granite that surrounds the outside of the new Joe Moakley
Federal Court building in South Boson, MA.

I don't know if it's posted inside, though.

11. Alabama
Is this whole thing a setup? I don't see the SCOTUS even taking this case. William Pryor, the attorney general of AL is up for nomination by GW. His hearing in Congress was farcical. Now, he says he will follow the law in AL. Okay, he can say "See, I can enforce the law. Now, appoint me." The Repubs will get their way by hook or crook.

Aren't they violating this commandment by even having this "statue"?

14. I wish they would impeach and disbar him.
He's a total whackjob, nutcase. Shades of George Corley Wallace.
