A Preview Of President's Bush's Visit? (Trouble brewing in Portland)
PORTLAND - President Bush doesn't arrive in Portland until tomorrow morning, and already five protestors have been arrested.
On Tuesday, three protestors were arrested after climbing a tree and unfurling a "United Against Bush" banner on the University of Portland campus where President Bush is scheduled to visit Thursday.

Police arrested the trio and two bystanders who refused to obey police commands.

The protesters climbed the 80-foot tree early Tuesday, prompting police and firefighters with a ladder to come to the scene and order them down.

At first, the protesters refused to come down, but descended Tuesday afternoon as supporters on the ground cheered.

1. Portland?! Is Bush out of his frigging mind?!
This will be much worse than his visit to San Francisco!\
In San Francisco, they had the highway exits blocked off our busiest highway two exits up and down each way with SNIPERS ALL OVER THE PLACE.

Miles away from where Bush was even appearing there were all sorts of motorcycle cops and heavy-duty snipers.

If I had to lay money on where there might be a larger concentration of Bush Haters than in San Francisco, I'd bet Portland.

3. Is this another fund raising trip?
All Bush* does is vacation, and raise money from corporate welfare recipients.

Hey, Senor pResidente, how about doing something for our troops, instead of cutting their pensions and inviting attacks upon them ("Bring 'em on"), or doing something for America's unemployed citizens? Our economy is in the crapper, or hadn't you noticed?

"I think the American people--I hope the American--I don't think, let me--I hope the American people trust me."

5. worse even than that
Not only is it a shakedown, but this event will cost Portland millions of dollars, just like the last time. Hundreds of hours of police overtime, which should be paid by the RNC, will stretch budgets. The downtown will be shut off and businesses will suffer. Portland has become a laughingstock (see Doonesbury) because orf its grossly underfunded school system and this will only make it worse. Will Bush ever speak at a gathering that isn't handpicked? (the answer is - of course not). I wonder if he will trot out the trifecta joke again, since we are nearing the second anniversary of 9/11. That seems to always elicit gales of laughter from those Republican patriots.

7. Not at all! This is "an honor" and "a bargain"
I couldn't believe it myself, either, but there it was, yesterday on the Oregonian's editorial page! Because Bush is lighting in Portland to pick up a fast million bucks or so for his already overfunded campaign, it's "an honor" to the peons, who shouldn't be so tacky as to total up the security costs of his visit. This startling editorial concludes with a paragraph that begins "Any way you look at it, a city's date with a president is a bargain."

So, regardless of the fact that we can't keep our public school doors open, and we can't fix the broken and crumbling bridges up and down I-5, and the state is shutting down aid and assistance programs left and right, this visit is "a bargain" "any way you look at it."

So shut up, all you commie pinkos, and just wave your flags! The president's comin' to town to meet with your betters and then leave! Just pay for the security and very few people (relatively speaking) will have to get hurt.

11. "Portland welcomes the Bush Mafiosi"
I read your comments, and that's exactly what I thought - it's like paying "protection", except, in this case, for the Don.

12. Love your quote
Here's another (* was never in Vietnam):

"One of the most important things I learned in Vietnam is, uh--that you cannot--can--fight a guerillla war with conventional forces."

The little liar.

8. The protests will actually help Smirk with his fundie base
Cameras will roll and pick out the "weirdest" looking protesters. All the blood and violence and mayhem will be blamed on the protestors althought the Portland police are nothing better than storm trooper commanded by Darth Vader...all locked up in their suits and helmets and shields.

I say do it anyway. The protests have to re-start. IraqNam is gonna have to be ended by the people, cause the politicians will never do it. They suffer from the deadliest sin: Pride

13. I believe your prediction is right on
In many ways August 22, 2002 was a catalyst for the huge protests that followed.

It took me seven months to get up to Portland after that memorial day. But when I did on March 15, it was glorious!

I still want to get home (SF) for one.

14. More from an activist
"Here's some weird news.

Police have evacuated entire neighborhoods already. They're telling people they can't play in the local parks and they've told everyone to remove any loose items from their yard. They're scaring the shit out of my sister.

She's being lead to believe that evil rioters are going to tear apart her home. More people are needed to talk to these neighbors and calm the hysteria and get people back into their homes and parks!

My mother called me in a panic after watching the corporate media because she thought there was a riot happening today and she was scared that I might not be safe.

It's kind of creepy, like as if they're planning to assasinate activists without any witnesses with the public too afraid of the evil protesters to question. Of course, it's just scare tactics and I hope they wouldn't do something like that, but it's still creepy.

Anyways just a heads up.

Solidarity,

Victory"
