Powell seeks Arafat aid on terror, warns of 'cliff'
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N21249160.htm

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 21 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Thursday called on Palestinian President Yasser Arafat to use security forces he controls to help stop attacks on Israel and said if Israel and the Palestinians abandon a U.S.-backed peace plan they will fall off "a cliff."

"(I) call on Chairman Arafat to work with (Palestinian) Prime Minister (Mahmoud) Abbas and to make available to ... Abbas those security elements that are under his control so that they can allow progress to be made on the 'road map' -- end terror, end this violence," Powell told reporters. "At the end of the road map is a cliff that both sides will fall off."

Powell spoke after meeting U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on topics including Tuesday's Palestinian suicide bombing that killed 20 people on a Jerusalem bus, which U.S. officials fear will trigger a new cycle of attack and retaliation.

2. Seems Arafat only agreed to PR amd marching restrictions last night

But a spokesperson said there would be "detentions" - not arrests - and last time detentions lasted 30 days - so media is to report that Arafat is into "a campaign that even in the worst nightmares Hamas and Islamic Jihad never imagined" Does not pass the laugh test.

Good Luck Colin - hope you do better than you did finding "coalition troops - 200 from Latin America - but it adds a half dozen country names to our coalition!" - which also does not pass the laugh test.

From the AP:

"In the end, Abbas and Arafat agreed on a joint statement which said the Palestinian Authority would enforce the rule of law, take control of illegal weapons and end "military displays" by the militants, a reference to marches led by gunmen.Islamic Jihad and Hamas officials said they were ordered by Palestinian police not to speak to reporters, and many leaders of the two groups had their phones turned off Thursday. The Palestinian leadership statement did not refer to arrests, which would appear to be a cornerstone of any crackdown, but Palestinian officials said there would be detentions. "It's a campaign that even in the worst nightmares Hamas and Islamic Jihad never imagined," said Elias Zananiri, a spokesman for Palestinian security chief Mohammed Dahlan. "There's a list of people to be arrested."

3. Is Powell losing it?
He's usually... uh... more articulate.

"At the end of the road map is a cliff that both sides will fall off."

So why in the hell would you wanna follow the map to the cliff? I guess he means if the road map (peace plan) ends, it's into the void... But, sheesh! Is DubyaSpeak contagious?

Ya don't think he's under just a wee bit of pressure, do you?

5. Why does Powell even bother???
Edited on Thu Aug-21-03 11:43 AM by Gman
Tom Delay and the lunatic fringe right wing have proved successful in torpedoing the "road map" as they have tried to do from the very beginning.

Remember Delay's trip to Israel a month or so ago when Bush was in Africa? It was well known he was there to undermine Bush. How do we know Delay didn't arrange for the bus bombing in order to make sure the "road map" never got off the ground?

10. Delay
doesn't need to arrange the bus bombing, all he needs to do is tell Sharon that he has a green light to do a couple of targeted assassination on Palestinian leaders and then the bus bomb is a foregone conclusion.

11. An analogy
Two street gangs, the 'Reds' and the 'Blues', are going at each other hammer and tongs in downtown LA. It's a turf war and there is blood and dead bodies everywhere.

So after a while the two gangs sort of decide that maybe there is more to life than killing people or being killed.

So they agree a truce.

Things are going pretty swimmingly for a couple of weeks, and then one day some 'Reds' wander into 'Blue' territory and wack one of the 'Blue' leaders while he is in bed with his girlfriend.

Question: What happens next ??

12. That's all Powell is useful for now
a sort of Public Relations operative, going to the UN looking all terribly concerned, saying "we must make every step to salvage the Roadmap", trying to muster all the sencerity that the lying sack of shit can.

"...U.S. officials fear will trigger a new cycle of attack and retaliation."

Don't want to worry you State guys but I think the train may have left the station.
