Janklow denies newspaper report that he hired private eye
DENNIS GALE
Associated Press

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Rep. Bill Janklow on Thursday strongly denied a report that he has hired a private investigator to gather information from Saturday's crash that killed a Minnesota motorcyclist.

Thursday's Washington Post reported that a man who called himself a former District of Columbia police officer said he had been hired by Janklow to compile information about the accident and the cyclist.

"This guy's just a liar and he's invented this," Janklow said in a brief telephone interview with The Associated Press.

"It isn't just a matter of denying it. It never happened. ... I don't even know who he is."

4. I don't know about that
Americans love these kinds of politicians. Just look at the bulk of congress and the WH.

2. Janklow should contact "pickles" for advice
on beating this rap.

If Janklow and Traficant aren't soaping each others backs by the end of the year we will know the Repuke fix is in.

7. What's the point of being a private eye
if you can't keep it private?

In another development Thursday, a man claiming to be a former District of Columbia police officer who was hired by Janklow's family to investigate the accident and Scott's background admitted that he made up the story.

Jim Wainscoat, 62, of Viborg, S.D., told the Associated Press that he was not hired by Janklow's family, as was initially reported in the Washington Post. He said he was studying the accident scene because he thought news coverage had been slanted against Janklow.

Earlier in the day, Janklow told the Associated Press, "This guy's just a liar, and he's invented this. It isn't just a matter of denying it. It never happened."

9. Wainscoat sounds like a real nut
Looks as if the WP may have gotten hosed by this guy. I read that article this morning and couldn't believe that Janklow would be that dumb to hire him - but then again, he blew through a stop sign at 75 mph so I guess anything is possible.
