Smith, 40, who goes by the moniker "Citizen Smith" on the radio, now hosts an afternoon talk show on WICC-AM in Bridgeport.
He started his job at WICC during the week in March when Mayor Joseph P. Ganim was found guilty of federal corruption charges and the Iraq War started.
"It was a peak time for talk radio," Smith said. "All seven lines here were lit up."
His job is to stir things up, and Smith rarely disappoints. From satellite dishes to U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman's presidential candidacy, he has an opinion on everything.
Frequent targets are nuisance taxes, conservative politicians and President George Bush. "I think right-wing Republicans have created hostility on the airwaves, so I've declared war on them," he said.
