Fugitive Texas Democrats Helped by Web Drive (MoveOn gives $1M)
DALLAS (Reuters)

The grass-roots Internet group MoveOn.org said on Saturday it expected to raise $1 million to support 11 Texas Democratic senators who fled to New Mexico over a redistricting fight.

The liberal, Web-based group, which has helped raise millions of dollars for Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean, launched the campaign earlier this week that will produce television ads and radio spots to criticize a White House-backed plan to redraw Texas congressional districts.

The redistricting would add about five to seven Republican seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, adding to a narrow Republican majority.

"This is the single biggest fund-raising campaign we have done on a single issue," said Zack Exley, organizing director for MoveOn. ---

money for ANY political candidate at this point.

I think that the support they are giving to the Texas Democrats is outstanding.

3. Is any of this Move On money going to help with expenses?
The Texas 11 are spending a lot and not earning anything right now. Is any of this Move On money going to help with expenses? I am confused on this point.

5. MoveOn money only for ads
Nancy, I think this campaign is only for the ads that they want to run in Texas to keep pressure on this fight. The Texas press has pretty much fallen asleep on this issue, they don't care for it anymore. There is a lot of misinformation that the state repuke party is getting on the air, so that has to be countered and it's going to be very expensive. That's why they need all this money.

There are two other ways to contribute to the fighting Ds in Texas. First is the new Killer D PAC http://www.killerds.org/

And for the Texas 11 the money can go to their caucus.

Put a note on the check stub the Texas 11 fund.

7. Just made out a small check and will mail later today!
Thank goodness for your Texas 11!

Is MoveOn even allowed to give money directly for their benefit? It would seem a bit more difficult for them to do so rather than to support ads ... Aww, what do I know?

4. I did my small part here
Every little bit helps. And it's not over, if you want to give the url is
https://www.moveon.org/texasads/
The DNC also got in and helped promote the fund raising for these ads. I was happy to see them team up.

What I think the article meant about fundraising for Dean is that if you voted in the MoveOn.org primary you were asked to donate to the candidate you voted for. I did and I think that's how they determined as estimate of raising millions for Dean. It really did give Dean a big kick start in his campaign.

6. Thanks
Thanks for clarifying that, Sonia. I didn't think they'd collected for any candidates directly.

Way to go, Move On. This is a great country, and we're going to take it back!

8. Thanks for the link
Just donated $5 for the Texas Dems and $5 to the MoveOn general fund. Wish I could afford to donate more.

I think it is important to remember to give to their general fund. MoveOn is an organization that is making a difference. We need to support them.

10. Don't forget to give in honor of Sally Baron
....the wonder Wisconsin grandmother who passed on last week and whose family asked that memorials be made to any entity that is working to oust Bush. She thought Bush was a liar and named him "Whistle Ass"

11. Here is what the MoveOn.org e-mail said on what is needed for theTX Dems:
What is needed

The Democratic Senators currently in Albuquerque have two critical needs. The first is to generate increased public awareness of the situation. By all reason, every day the Senators are out of the state this story should get bigger. Instead, news media have gradually lost interest in the story. The California recall has dominated the attention of the national media, and the Texas media has largely lost interest in the story -- out of sight, out of mind. Without public attention to this story, the Republicans have all the leverage -- if it does not cost them politically, it costs them nothing(8) to continue calling special sessions until the Texas 11 are forced to come home.

The second critical need is funding. The cost of hotels, meeting rooms, staff support, and public relations efforts is mounting. In addition, the Senators must defend themselves legally against Republican efforts to compel their return, while also filing legal claims against the Republican power play. The Senators are actively raising money for the Texas Senate Democratic Caucus Fund to offset these costs and prepare themselves for a stay of indefinite duration in Albuquerque.

So they do mention helping with living expenses and legal expenses as well as ads. I am so happy to hear about the success.
You may also conbribute to Texas Democratic Party by regular mail or by phone and specify money is to cover expenses of the Texas 11.
