BBC launches public attack on Murdoch 'imperialism'
BBC launches public attack on Murdoch 'imperialism'
By Vincent Graff, Media and Culture Editor
25 August 2003

The controller of BBC1 launched an unprecedented attack on Rupert Murdoch yesterday, calling the media billionaire a "capital imperialist" who wants to destabilise the corporation because he "is against everything the BBC stands for".

Lorraine Heggessey said Mr Murdoch's continued attacks on the BBC stemmed from a dislike of the public sector. But he did not understand that the British people "have a National Health Service, a public education system" and trust organisations that are there for the benefit of society and not driven by profit.

Her controversial comments, in an interview with The Independent, are believed to be the first time a senior BBC executive has publicly attacked the motives of the media tycoon. They follow an intensification of anti-BBC rhetoric from Mr Murdoch's side.

3. One of the reasons i think
why the Labour people suck up to Murdoch;

(This is from memory) I think it was the election between John Major and Niel Kinnock (Labour) which was a very close election.

The Sun has the biggest circulation but it also gets passed around the workplace so in fact quite a major percentage of the population see the Sun.

Just before the election The Sun had on their frontpage a picture of Niel Kinnock and just the headline:

IF THIS MAN WINS THE ELECTION WILL THE LAST PERSON LEAVING THE COUNTRY PLEASE TURN OUT THE LIGHTS

which made me draw breath I have to say.

Murdoch has to go down.

7. They need to demonize Murdoch with facts and make people understand
He only sees his media empire as a way to make money and make the world a worse place.

If the BBC can get the message out to the British people, maybe someone will dare to speak the truth in the U.S.

9. Pot and Kettle are both black, here.
One is a virtual public monopoly, and the other is trying to be a private monopoly on information. The solution is half way between. There should be a lot of competition, and not a ton of profit in the media business, and nobody should have a stranglehold on the kind of information and entertainment the public receives.

If you don't know how the BBC is run, ask me and I'll tell you.

10. "capital imperialist" ?
Isn't this the definition of "fascist"? Close enough, eh?

Upon inauguration of the new Democratic president in January 05' (can we make it till then?), one of his first orders of business should be, by executive order, the immediate re-imposition of the "Fairness Doctrine". His second order of business, should be to order his *new* Attorney General to charge nearly all of the major media companies in this nation, with RICO violations (this of course, after arresting the *old* AG for said/same). The third order of business, should be the prosecution of all those in the media who have conspired with the Bush regime (especially Murdoch, FOX, GE-NBC, N.Y. Times, Washington Post, Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Rielly, and Savage-Weiner), on charges of treason and sediton, with the stipulation that there will be no pardons or probations, and further, that "ultimate" penalties will be sought.

It's what they deserve, and the price for nearly destroying our nation. As soon as the Democratic nomineee is selected, we should all urge everyone we know to write the nominee, demanding they take the actions listed above, upon inauguration.
