Canada Signs Historic Land Deal With Dogrib Indians
The Associated Press
Published: Aug 26, 2003

RAE-EDZO, Northwest Territories (AP) - Canada's prime minister signed a land claim and self-governance deal with the country's 3,000 Dogrib Indians, characterizing the move as a "strengthening of Canada's federation."

Monday's deal sees the Dogrib assume control over 15,210 square miles of lake, river and tundra between Great Slave and Great Bear lakes in northern Canada - an area larger than Belgium that includes both of Canada's diamond mines.

In addition to ownership of the area's resources and significant control over their development, the agreement also contains unique provisions for the Dogrib to govern themselves.

Standing before a packed elementary school gymnasium, Prime Minister Jean Chretien praised the Tli Cho agreement between the federal government, the Northwest Territories and the Dogrib tribe.

The rules of the Latest Breaking News Forum require that when a poster is linking to an article, he/she must use the exact title of the article as the subject line.

Latest Breaking News Forum Rules

In this case, your subject line should read:

"Canada Signs Historic Land Deal With Dogrib Indians"

This is an important story, and I urge you to repost it with the correct subject line, even though I'm certain we LBN readers enjoyed your "sexed-up" line.

:-)

"What we see today is that in spite of the evolution of society, you have kept your culture and pride," Chretien said. "This is the glory of Canada - we can be what we are and at the same time be part of the greater Canada."

The is what Canadians call the 'Cultural Mosaic' as opposed to American paradigm, the 'Melting Pot'.
