Welcome to the Washington D.C. area Army Casualty Affairs Office website. On behalf of the Secretary of the Army and the soldiers currently serving, we would like to thank you for the service you and your loved ones are providing or have provided faithfully and honorably to our country. You must know that the loss of any soldier, actively serving, retired, or discharged, is shared by the nation.
We created this website so that you might have a single source of information on how to prepare or react to the death of a soldier and help you through this trying time. This website explains the steps you should take when your soldier family member dies. It also serves as a guide to the federal benefits, compensation, or entitlements for which you might be eligible.

Under no circumstances should you make any
guarantees to provide media access to family members;
If a reporter asks you to arrange an interview with a family member or asks to obtain information from a family
member, offer to take the reporter's name, organization and telephone number.
If the family members are approached by media desiring to be present at the funeral or memorial service, ensure that the family
members understand that it is solely their decision whether or not to allow the media at the service. However, the funeral director
needs to be advised if media will be attending so appropriate arrangements can be made.
In the event the family will be interviewed by the media or the family permits the media to attend the service, ensure the
family is informed that an Army PAO representative can provide assistance. If the family desires PAO assistance, contact the
PAO located at the installation responsible for providing support for the family and the funeral service director. If the family
does not request PAO assistance, you should still contact the PAO to inform them of anticipated media involvement.
