Arnold: No To Gay Marriage
(Los Angeles, California) Arnold Schwarzenegger today made his first public statement on gay issues in the campaign to unseat California governor Gay Davis. The bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-politician told a radio audience that he is opposed to gay marriage, but supports domestic partnership rights.

Answering a barrage of questions on a number of issues by Sean Hannity on his syndicated radio show, which also was broadcast live on Fox Television, Schwarzenegger said: "I do support domestic partnerships" but added that he was against gay marriage. He said marriage should be between a man and a woman.

But, Schwarzenegger has yet to answer a number of other issues important to the LGBT community in the state. Last week, five California lawmakers issued a public letter to the would-be governor. (story)

The politicians, Mark Leno, Christine Kehoe, Jackie Goldberg, Sheila Kuehl, and John Laird, all Democrats and members of the LGBT Caucus Of The California Assembly, accused Schwarzenegger of implying he is pro-gay without ever taking a stand.

So much for Ah-nold being "gay friendly". A gay friendly person wouldn't say NO to the ultimate one, which would give make everything truly equal.

6. On the show he said
gay marriage should be between a man and a woman.

(I know, I don't get it either)

In an interview currently profiled on Drudge he said...

"Gay people are fighting the same kind of stereotyping that bodybuilders are: People have certain misconceptions about them just as they do about us. Well, I have absolutely no hang-ups about the fag business..."

20. So it is okay..
for a man and woman to have a gay marriage but not a man with man or woman with woman?

Wait!!! How about a straight marriage between a man and man or woman and woman?

8. This is all semantics
What do you mean "gay friendly"? Dean is clearly "gay friendly" in the sense of wanting to provide equal benefits (insurance proceeds, health care, job availability, itself). He also is gay-friendly in terms of gays in the military and his vow to repeal the "Defense" (Gag) of Marriage Act.

Unfortunately, he flinches on gay marriage, and let's face it, that's probably so he can be elected. I think Kucinich, Sharpton and Braun are the only candidates who have come out (so to speak) in favor of gay marriage.

So there's a spectrum here....Kucinich/Sharpton/Braun are the gay-friendliest...Dean is gay-friendlier....Huffington, Bustamante, and Schwarzenegger are pretty gay friendly...Bush, Simon, McClintock, etc. are not gay-friendly at all...and the televangelists, Rick Santorum, Anita Bryant, etc. have their own place in hell for the virulent anti-gay, anti-human positions.

Sorry....got off on a rant, there...

that the article refers to Gay Davis rather than Gray Davis. A bit Freudian?

16. I love how you guys are being dispatched on different threads
The Arnie is no nazi contingent doesn't mix with the "Arnie's bizzare orgies are none of your business" guys" and yet another group is taking care of the "Arnie pontificates on marriage" thread. Very organized of you. But does anyone see a pattern in all these threads and the people who vehemently oppose them?

21. Dean's position is similar on a state level. So is Kerry's, I believe.
There are a plethora of other reasons to vote against Arnold.

DEAN: We have civil unions, which gives equal rights -- doesn't give marriage, but it gives equal rights in terms of insurance, employment rights, inheritance rights, hospital visitation, to every single Vermonter, no matter who they are.

You know, interestingly enough, Dick Cheney took a position in 2000 in the debates that is not very different than mine. He said, this is not a federal issue. I really am inclined to leave this matter to the states, and I think we ought to let states figure out how to give equal rights to everybody in the way that they do it. So I think this is kind of a political issue at the federal level, but the power to decide these things really belongs to the state level.

KING: All right. On your own state level, if it were a referendum, would you vote for gay marriage?

DEAN: If what were -- we don't have a referendum in my state, and we have civil unions, and we deliberate chose civil unions, because we didn't think marriage was necessary in order to give equal rights to all people.

Marriage is a religious institution, the way I see it. And we're not in the business of telling churches who they can and cannot marry. But in terms of civil rights and equal rights under the law for all Americans, that is the state's business, and that's why we started civil unions.

KING: So you would be opposed to a gay marriage?

DEAN: If other states want to do it, that's their business. We didn't choose to do that in our state.

23. It's hypocritical to bash Arnold as anti gay
and give the candidates a pass for holding the same " no gay marriage " position.

Without looking it up, I believe the only candidate who has endorsed gay marriage was Sharpton.

Thank you w4rma.

25. If you were taking into account
only this one issue, Arnold would make a pretty good DLC-type Democratic candidate.
