Group Launches Recall Effort Nevada Gov.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Emboldened by recall efforts in California, a group of Nevada conservatives upset about the largest tax increase in state history began recall proceedings Wednesday against the popular Republican governor.

The group filed a notice of intent with the Nevada Secretary of State's Office in Las Vegas to seek a recall election against Gov. Kenny Guinn. Organizers have 90 days to collect 128,109 signatures, or 25 percent of those who cast ballots in the 2002 general election.

Leading Democrats dismissed the idea of unseating the Republican governor.

"I don't think there's one Democrat who is going to sign that petition. It's just stupid,'' Chris Wicker, chairman of the Washoe County Democratic Party, said on KRNV-TV.

Dane said more than 600 volunteers have signed up to collect petitions. He said the efforts began before the California recall, although he acknowledged events there could bolster their cause.

"I'm hoping people in Nevada look at California and get excited about the possibilities,'' Dane said.

This is setting a VERY bad precedent and something needs to be done about it.

that California residents WORK against the recall -- not just vote against it -- WORK against it. Call your local Dem office and ask for a precinct walking list or volunteer for a phone bank. If you don't have a local Dem. office, call the County Clerk/Elections board and get your own precinct list -- the cost is minimal. Hey, I know we are ALL busy with jobs and kids and school or whatever, but I cannot stress how important this is for EVERY California Democrat to become INVOLVED! It will only take a few hours a week and NOTHING is more important right now. As we can see, the fallout from this recall will be ENORMOUS. If we can DEFEAT this recall here in California, it will take the wind out of the Republicans' sails. If we fail, it will just embolden them.

Note to the Nevada Dems behind this recall effort: Bad idea, guys! Let the Republicans be seen as the party who oppose free and fair elections. Two wrongs never did make a right, guys, it makes a mess.

When they first started the recall talk in California, he said that if it worked, it would be bad because it would start happening all over the country. Okay, this one state isn't exactly "all over the country" yet, but it looks like he may have been correct. A dangerous precedent, indeed.

I don't much like Kenny (he's a Bush backer, the former CEO of one of the biggest natural gas companies in the country, and a non-native from Arkansas), but this is a joke. Guinn has turned out to pretty centrist, in a state that demands it from most of their politicians. The group of wing-nuts sponsoring this, are so far to the right of the average Nevadan, it's not even funny. Most of these jokers are from the rural outback, with some VERY important exceptions though.

The casinos, and alcoholic beverage distribution and sales companies took most of the brunt from the tax increases. The casinos, of course, are the real powers in Nevada, and pissing them off has ended many a political career. They are pissed, and want revenge now. As for the alcoholic beverage people, Larry Ruvo at Southern Wine & Spirits is a real power (as Southern Wine & Spirits is in California and Florida too), along with some of his even more powerful lobbyist friends. But, Larry usually doles out dough pretty evenly to both sides.

Anyway, this is all about anti-tax wingnuts, and the power elite, going after Guinn. I think there are enough Demos in Las Vegas now, combined with Reno's lesser amounts, to either kill a recall straight out, or if it goes to a vote, Guinn will be retained.

BTW, Nevada WILL be going Democratic in 04' for President! That's a promise! What we have to worry about right now, is Harry Reid. He's a buddy of Tom Daschle's (and the Minority Whip), and he's been a real "pink-tutu" Dem. He hasn't been worth a shit fighting the Repugs, and has weak support from rank and file Dems, who like a good fighter. This could sink him....

He's getting a pass in 2004, and he's pretty good on the floor as whip.

I know that his opinion on abortion isn't particularly popular here, but I think that he is a very good senator. He fights the republicans everyday on the senate floor while all the other democrats are in their offices and committee meetings Reid makes sure the republicans don't try anything sneaky on the senate floor. He should be reelected because Nevadans should want to have the next Democratic senate leader. If democrats don't take back the senate I think that he will become Minority Leader. He is very popular, but he is quieter and nicer than other senators so he doesn't get in the news a lot. He was also crucial in convincing Jim Jeffords to switch parties in 2004. I really think that he is one of the most effective behind the scenes senators.

but this isn't going anywhere. Guinn is known as the "Anointed One" and got 68.12% in 2002.

I'm sure it would've been closer had the Dems actually fielded a stronger candidate. But the Nevada Dem party has been on a decline.
