Bechtel gets bigger Iraq deal

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Halliburton Co. and Bechtel Group Inc., which have been working to rebuild Iraq after the U.S.-led war, are expected to win more contracts, news reports said Thursday.

The Wall Street Journal reported that San Francisco-based Bechtel will receive about $350 million more for postwar reconstruction work, or about 50 percent more than previous contract awards, in the latest sign that the Bush administration has seriously underestimated the cost of work in Iraq.

The Washington Post said that Halliburton, the world's second-largest oil field service company, could make hundreds of millions more dollars than earlier disclosed for services such as maintaining Iraqi oil fields under a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract, according to documents surveyed by the newspaper.

Representatives at Halliburton and Bechtel were not immediately available to comment.
